General Constable John Ofori Ankamah, on Monday testified in the case of General Constable Ebenezer Owusu who allegedly shot and killed a senior police officer and another person at the residence of the former Volta Regional Minister, Mr Kofi Dzamesi in 2008.
Led in evidence by Mr Anthony Rexford Wiredu, Principal State Attorney, General Constable (GC) Ankamah said, on that day, his colleague went to see his girl friend off when a visitor entered the premises of the Regional Minister.
According to the first prosecution witness, the visitor who came to the Ministers residence was called Dzikunu.
Witness said Dzikunu told him that the Regional Minister had asked him to see him.
GC Ankamah said he told Dzikunu that the Minister was not around, and that if he had a telephone he should call him, or go and come back the following day. Witness said Dzikunu said he had no telephone to call the Minister.
According to the witness, Dzikunu, however, by-passed him and forcibly entered the premises.
GC Ankamah said when GC Owusu, the accused person, returned he informed him about the conduct of Dzikunu.
Witness said GC Owusu then decided to inform their superior, Superintendent of Police T.T Nartey, now deceased at the Police Station.
According to the witness, GC Owusu returned with Supt. T.T Nartey, and he opened the gate to the residence for them (Supt. Nartey and GC Owusu).
In about five to ten minutes I heard several gun shots, witness said.
Witness said later Emmanuel Godzi, the driver of the Regional Minister, arrived at the residence and I narrated what had happened.
Witness said, Mr Godzi followed up, but he kept long at the residence and some Police officers called for re-enforcement.
I realised that one of the Police pick-ups had a body dumped on the trial of the pick-up with cassava leaves covering the said body, witness added.
Answering questions under cross-examination, GC Ankamah said, he could not tell who fired at the Regional Ministers residence.
GC Ankamah admitted that he and the accused person had been at the duty post at the Regional Ministers residence for two years, and they held their rifles while at post.
Charged with manslaughter and murder, Owusu has pleaded not guilty before a seven-member jury. He has been remanded into prison custody.
Owusu is said to have shot and killed Daniel Dzikunu Agbale instantly, and wounded Superintendent of Police Mr Theophilous T. Nartey who died three days later at the 37th Military Hospital.
The case for the prosecution was that Owusu was stationed at Ho and was later transferred to the Tamale Police Workshop.
On June 6, 2008 Owusu and General Constable John Ofori Ankomah were on duty at the residence of Mr Dzamesi.
At about 2100 hours that day, Agbale went to the former Regional Ministers residence, but he was prevented from entering.
Agbale, prosecution said, managed to enter the residence. Owusu who had then gone to see off his girl-friend was informed about the incident. Owusu proceeded to SP Narteys office and informed him, and the officer followed up to the residence of the former Regional Minister.
On entering the residence, a struggle ensued and Owusu who was armed with AK 47 rifle shot and killed Agbale and SP Nartey also got wounded.
Supt Nartey was taken to the hospital but later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital where he later passed on. GNA
