?In the history of humanity as written, the saddest part concerns the treatment of women; and had we before us its unwritten history we should find this part still sadder?-Upton Sinclair, ed.(1878-1986).

I know not many people will agree that women have not been treated fairly since the beginning of time. Patriarchy; the rule of father (male) over women is in itself violence because of its perverse effects women?s dignity and place in society. Christianity, as a patriarchal religion, traditional and Islamic teachings on women?s inferiority and the subordination of women, has been some of the basis for domestic violence.

Over the years women have been subjected to so much tribulation by their co-inhabiters expecially in our part of the world Africa. Women have been tortured in all manners be it psychological ,physical ,economic or sexual most commonly rape, kidnapping and trafficking, burns, acid attacks, ritual servitude and killing. An estimated 500, 000 women are trafficked annually to work as prostitutes in Europe. Our mind-set has reduced women to only doing house hold chores but we could make use of their heads too for women are very intelligent creatures and less corrupt too.
Should women have been given their proper place in society instead of just the kitchen many of the wrongdoings would not have existed in the world today and the world would have been a better place. Women need to be empowered to take up very prominent roles in the society. Men have always been uncomfortable with this topic but this is not new, since there have been great women leaders in the world but not many.

There have been female rulers in the world, the first to be recorded in history is Ku-Baba who ruled the Mesopotamian City-State of Ur round 2500BC.Egyptian queens are believed to have governed around 3000BC.

After the World I few women became part of the revolutionary governments in Russia, Hungary, Ukraine and Ireland. Currently there are 193 countries of the UN of which 29 of them have women as their heads of state. Denmark, UK, Argentina, Brazil, Central Africa Republic, Chile and Liberia are amongst the 29.The queen of the United Kingdom is also queen of the Bahamas, Grenada and St. Lucia. The future is brighter when women are more inclusive, loved and respected.
