As more companies employ mitigating measures in the face of Ghana?s worsening power crisis, the state broadcaster, GBC, has announced it is cutting down its broadcasting hours to save money and remain in business.
The decision was taken at a meeting by the company?s top hierarchy last week.? Major Albert B. Don-Chebe (Rtd.), Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, confirmed this in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM.
The Director-General however denied reports that there were also plans to cut down staff although the workers union at GBC said they had heard rumors of a looming job cut.
GBC, which owns a plethora of radio stations across Ghana?s ten regions as well as a national television station, says the cost of operating generator sets is taking a huge toll on their finances hence the decision to cut down transmission hours.
The national broadcaster?s 24-hour news and sports channels available on digital platforms? will also be affected by the decision.
The station?s radio stations which hitherto transmitted 24 hours on daily basis will now end transmission at 12:00am and resume at 4:00am.
Meanwhile tv3network.com has confirmed at GBC?s Twin City Radio in Takoradi that transmission ends there at 10:00pm and resumes at 5:00am.
One of Ghana?s notable media firms, Multimedia, took a similar decision last month for its numerous media platforms.
Other media houses have done same as the crisis locally christened ?dumsor? appears not to be improving or ending anytime soon.
