The Municipal Chief Executive of Ga South Municipal Assembly, Moses Kabu Kubi Ocansey, has outlined an extensive array of developmental projects completed and ongoing across the municipality, ranging from educational infrastructure to health facilities, roads, and sanitation initiatives.

In an exclusive interview, the MCE expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity to serve the people of Ga South and Ghana at large.

Legacy Projects Revived and Completed

Mr Ocansey disclosed that upon assuming office, his administration prioritised the completion of stalled “legacy projects” inherited from previous administrations, utilising allocations from the District Assemblies Common Fund.

He revealed that the Bokemi School project, abandoned under the previous government, has been completed following discussions with the Member of Parliament for Ngleshie Amanfro Bortianor, Felix Akwetey Okle. The facility has been handed over to the Ghana Education Service and is currently being used by students.

According to the MCE, Hon. Isaac Awuku Yibor, Member of Parliament (MP) for Domeabra Obom constituency also used his share of the common fund to construction 3 unit classroom at Avonyorkope which has also been handed over to GES and is being used by learners.

Similarly, the Calvary Baptist School at Avonyorkope community in the Domeabra Obom constituency, initially started during President Mahama’s first term but left incomplete, has also been completed and handed over.

A six-unit classroom two-storey block initiated by the previous NPP administration has been completed, with handover to the Ghana Education Service pending the conclusion of the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination.

Health Infrastructure Receiving Attention

The MCE reported significant progress on health facilities, including a CHIP compound at Akortia-Aku started by President Mahama’s first administration. The facility is currently at roofing level and has been upgraded from CHIP compound to clinic status.

Another CHIP compound at Fanykeniko, started by the NPP government but never completed, is almost finished, with only electricity connection remaining before handover to the Ghana Health Service.

New CHIP compounds are under construction at Nsunano, reaching lentil level, and at Odunkwa in the Domeabra Obom constituency, where footing and filling have been completed.

Road Infrastructure Ongoing

Several road construction projects are ongoing across the municipality, Mr Ocansey noted. These include drain construction and roadworks at Kalabule, Ngleshie Amanfro, Tuba-Kuwait, and the Bortianor to Langba road. Work is also progressing on the Ashalaja to Kwakupamfu road in the Domeabra enclave.

New Educational Facilities Springing Up

The MCE announced the construction of a six-unit two-storey basic school at Broadcasting in the Akwasa electoral area, noting that the area currently has no public school, forcing parents to send their children to Bortianor, Galilea, and Amanfro for education.

A primary school facility is being constructed at Tuba Kuwait, initially planned as a three-classroom kindergarten but upgraded following community requests. A school project at Tomifa, funded through the MP’s Common Fund, has been awarded and will commence soon.

Additional educational projects include a six-unit storey facility at J-Krodua and another at Kyekyewere, both expected to be completed within three to four months.

Market and Sanitation Efforts

A market is under construction at Bortiano, while a 24-hour market project has been sited on land between Nurses Junction and Asbaham in the Domeabra-Obom constituency.

On sanitation, Mr Ocansey highlighted extensive desilting and dredging exercises at Nsunano, Tuba junction, Bortiano Junction, Emmanuel Estates, and Brigade. He recounted how his administration averted flooding when the Weija dam was opened, dredging the estuary to the sea and preventing loss of life.

“We never lost any life there,” he stated firmly, noting that the MCE for Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, Felix Odartey Lamptey, assisted in the exercise.

Employment and Revenue Initiatives

The MCE disclosed that he has employed several youth into the work task force and as city guards. He has restructured the task force’s remuneration from poor salaries to a commission-based system.

“When you go, the amount of money that you help the assembly to raise, we give you a percentage out of that. They are happy now, and they are working tirelessly,” he explained.

Appeal to Residents

Mr Ocansey appealed to community members to properly dispose of refuse and patronise licensed sanitation companies. He encouraged shop owners to contract young persons to desilt gutters in front of their premises rather than waiting for the assembly.

“We need to prosecute people who are not abiding by the laws. At least we need to keep Ga South clean, and we have to be disciplined in everything that we do,” he concluded.

The MCE also announced that lobbying efforts have secured approval for an Islamic Senior High School and a nursing and midwifery training college at Ashifla in the Domeabra-Obom enclave.
