As part of efforts to improve, as well as offer quality secondary education in the Central Region, Gomoa Mampong Senior High School is offering free admission and accommodation to all first year students of the school.
The move, according to authorities of the school, is to enable students in the area, as well as those from other parts of the country whose parents can not afford to send them to Senior High School because of admission fees, the opportunity to obtain Secondary education.
The Administrator of the school, Mr. Ishmael Abban, who disclosed this in an interview with The Moment noted there is high illiteracy rate in the Gomoa District, hence the idea of establishing the school in the area to make the people embrace education.
Known as the hub of education in the country decades ago, the Central Region is now described as one of the regions with low educational standard coupled with high incidents of teenage pregnancy and high poverty rate.
But Mr. Abban said the presence of Gomoa Mampong SHS is meant to help change the trend in the Region.
Established in Sept. 2001 with only twenty students, Gomoa Mampong SHS now has a population of over ninety students, with eleven highly trained and qualified teaching staff and hostel facilities, and offer courses in Business with option in Accounting, General Arts and Information Communication and Technology [ICT].
Though the school faces a lot of challenges because of its location, according to the Administrator, yet it has attracted students from both far and near, including areas like Greater Accra, Twifo Praso and Twifo Hemang all in the Central Region, as well as Tarkwa in the Western Region.
He however commended the Chiefs and people of the town for exhibiting their support for the establishment of the school in the area.
Meanwhile, a tutor of the school, Mr. Eric Madubu has appealed to parents to take the education of their children seriously, as that is the only inheritance they can bequethe them.
According to him, it now time parents begin to realize and appreciate the education of their children, instead of spending lavishly on material things.
He revealed that though some parents, particularly those in the rural areas are not educated, yet they have seen the need to invest in the education of their children.
He later attributed the problem of teenage pregnancy among children of school going age to poor parental control and therefore advice parents to be conscious about the upbringing of their children.
He said as a result of this situation, students staying at the hostel of the school are put under strict supervision by their hostel masters and mistresses to ensure they do not engage in any pre-marital sexton end their education prematurely.
