Ghana defeated Mali 2-0 here on Saturday night to leave Group D at the Africa Cup of Nations wide open after Guinea earlier hammered Botswana 6-1.
The 2010 World Cup participants are now top of the group on six points from two matches, while Guinea and their opening-day conquerors Mali are on three points, with all three teams still in the reckoning to advance to the knockout stage.
To add to the suspense, even point-less Botswana are not mathematically out of contention.
On Wednesday, Mali will battle Botswana in Libreville and Ghana take on Guinea in Franceville in the final throw of the Group D dice.
Star striker Asamoah Gyan opened the scoring for Ghana in the 63rd minute with a well-struck free-kick from the edge of the Mali box after Andre Ayew was brought down by Bakaye Traore.
Baby Jet Gyan had struggled with an ankle injury leading up to the game but Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic insisted on fielding the UAE-based star and it paid handsome dividends.
Mali came close to restoring parity two minutes after Gyans opener through Sochaux forward Modibo Maiga, who perfectly met a header from a corner only for the ball to roll out for a goal-kick.
Ayew doubled Ghana’s lead in the 76th minute when he was stylishly set up by Gyan on the edge of the Mali goal area and drove in to unleash an unstoppable pile-driver past Soumaila Diakite in the Mali goal.
This was a typical derby with no fewer than six bookings as both teams cancelled each other out in a packed midfield with tough tackles flying in all directions.
Big Mali striker Cheick Diabate proved in the first half to be a thorn in the flesh of the young Black Stars central defence of Jonathan Mensah and John Boye, playing in the absence of the more experienced John Mensah and Isaac Vorsah. It was a cagey start by both teams and it was not until the 25th minute that Asamoah Kwadwo made the first real attempt at goal.
The Udinese midfielder, who was starting his first game of the tournament, fired from distance only for Diakite to parry into the path of Sulley Muntari, who shot wide.
Ten minutes later, the same player blasted another fierce shot from the edge of the Mali goal area, but again it was off-target.
On 38 minutes, Mali responded nicely with a Diabate free-kick on the edge of the box that struck both posts with diving Ghana goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey beaten.
In first-half additional time, Ayew rose above two Mali defenders to meet a cross from the right by stand-in skipper John Pantsil, but again it was off the mark.

Steven Tyler tried to win over Jennifer Lopez by getting naked and swimming in a pool (watch out, Casper Smart!).
He might have butchered the National Anthem during the AFC Championship game, but at least he didn’t decide to streak! The rocker is obviously comfortable in his own skin, and he thinks stripping down is a great way to win someone over (so is that how he got Erin Brady to agree to marry him?).
According to Contact Music, Ryan Seacrest and the rocker recently dished about his sexy skinny dip with Jay Leno. Seacrest told the talk show host that they were staying at the Wynn Las Vegas resort to film an episode of American Idol. They had previously watched the La Reve show there that features artists dancing underwater, and Jennifer Lopez was standing next to the La Reve pool when Ryan heard her scream—there was a naked body in the water!
The naked man turned out to be Steven Tyler, who was trying to impress J-Lo with his own underwater acrobatics (surely his fiancée can’t be too happy about his amorous antics involving all his anatomy). Tyler told Leno that he was just looking for an excuse to get naked in front of Jennifer, but that’s not always the best idea—women can have men arrested for exposing themselves in front of them, after all.
The rocker said he had “high hopes” that he could woo J-Lo with his naked swimming stunt, but obviously it didn’t work—she’s still with boy toy Casper Smart, and he’s still engaged to Erin Brady.
Maybe Jennifer Lopez was just turned off by Steven Tyler’s moobs (man boobs)—for such a thin guy, he’s got quite a lot going on up there.
It’s just a shame that these two crazy kids didn’t get together—Steven’s group Aerosmith once combined rock and rap with the help of Run D.M.C., and he and Jennifer could have also made sweet music together by combing her Latin sound with his gigantic mouth to make something truly amazing—maybe they could have collaborated for “Love in a Fiat” or “Dude Looks Like a Baby” (in honor of Casper Smart).

Hopefully, Catherine Zeta-Jones will have a pregnancy free of complications. It would only be heartbreaking for her and Michael Douglas if her pregnancy will be a difficult one. Together, this couple has gone through enough.

Mr Cletus Avoka, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Zebilla Constituency announced this when he was endorsed by popular acclamation by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Parliamentary Candidate for the area.
According to Mr Avoka, who is also the Majority Leader in Parliament, the Northern caucus of MPs have already met the Minister of Road and Highways and President Mills and they have all pledged to work on the road to ensure an easy transportation of goods and services.
“We the Northern caucus of MPs will continue to pursue the matter to ensure that the road is worked on”, he stressed.
He said in terms of road developments, the NDC has a good track record and that it was the government which tarred the roads from Accra to as far as Paga in the Upper East Region.
The MP also announced that Parliament was working hard to pass bills to eradicate negative cultural practices that undermined the fundamental human rights of women, stressing that, Parliament would pass the “property rights of spouses bill” this year.
”The NDC Government is also encouraging and supporting the installation of Queen mothers in the three Northern Regions to ensure a balanced development”
Mr Avoka thanked the delegates and the entire constituency members and assured them that he would bring more development projects to the area such as the upgrading of the Zebilla Market, an increase in the sponsorship package for students in tertiary institutions.
He stated that the people of the three Northern Regions would have their share of the Rural Electricity Project this year as Parliament was about to pass a law to that effect.
He appealed to members of the NDC in the constituency to avail themselves of the biometric registration, scheduled to take place on 24th March this year, to enable them to get another constituency and a district.
The Bawku West District Chief Executive, Alhaji Anaba Adam Moro said the NDC government has brought a lot development to the area and mentioned the construction of 132 classroom blocks and the provision of 9,500 dual desks to school in the districts as an example.
He said the construction of four Community Health Planning centre, a 40 bed multipurpose building for the Zebilla hospital, construction of 200 institutional and public latrines, drilling of 80 boreholes and the distribution of 18,753 free school uniforms to school children district wide as some of the projects.

President John Evans Atta Mills at the weekend unveiled the statue of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President at the forecourt of the new African Union (AU) building in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He was assisted by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, out-going Chairman of the AU, and Dr Jean Ping, Chairman of the African Union Commission, moments after the building was inaugurated.
The building stands at the former site of Ethiopia’s maximum security prisons.
President Mills was the Guest of Honour at the ceremony, which was performed in the presence of a number of African leaders attending the 18th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU.
The ceremony was also attended by Professor Francis Nkrumah, a medical biologist and Madam Samia Nkrumah, Chairperson of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), children of Dr Nkrumah, who were invited by President Mills to the ceremony.
Also in attendance were former President Jerry John Rawlings, Mr Allan Kyerematen of the largest minority New Patriotic Party , Mrs Mary Chinery-Hesse, former Special Advisor to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Dr Don Arthur of the Office of the President, and Mr Kwesi Quartey, Ghana’s Ambassador to Ethiopia.
The unveiling of the statue was in recognition of the leaders of the 54-nation continental body of the leading role of Dr Nkrumah in the African liberation struggle.
Dr Nkrumah was also founding member of the Organisation of African Unity, now the AU, as well as the Pan Africanist Movement.
The brain behind the statue was Dr Don Arthur, who is also an architect and a sculptor. Work was done on it by Mamphey Developers in Accra, when the Government of Ghana insisted to the AU for the statue to be done in Ghana.
Cast in bronze, the 3.5 metre statue of Dr Nkrumah who was overthrown in a coup in 1966 depicts the late leader wearing a short sleeve shirt in an African design with a pair of trousers and shoes to match.
The first president of Ghana had raised his right hand with a short walking stick in the left hand, with the head raised and looking into the heavens.
Underneath the statue is the inscription: “Ethiopia shall stretch forth her hands unto God, Africa must unite,” a statement on the founding of the predecessor of the AU, the Organisation of African Unity in May 1963.
Shedding tears of joy, Prof Nkrumah told the Ghana News Agency that the unveiling of the statue was a significant honour to the memory of his father and his family.
He described the moment as historic, and said the family was very proud of the recognition given to their father, and proud of being a Ghanaian.
Samia, who said the representation of the family at the ceremony was fair, expressed happiness about the event, describing it as a restoration of the previous recognition given to Dr Nkrumah.
She however called for Africa’s emancipation to go beyond politics to the economic, stressing more intra African trade from the current 10 per cent.
Mr Kyerematen, described the event as historical and very symbolic and called for the review of the notes by people who do not acknowledge Nkrumah as a great African.
He said Nkrumah inspires vision and hope for Ghana and called for more commitment to the national cause as a people with one destiny.
Mrs Chinery -Hesse said the statue of Nkrumah was a symbolic continuation of the journey to free Africa.
She said the lesson that could be learned was for hard work, which would be recognised at the right time.
Dr Don Arthur said the greatness of Nkrumah has led to the celebration, not only for himself, but also to Ghana, Africa and the rest of the world.
African leaders, had in 2009, accepted the proposal of President Mills to declare September 21, the birthday of Nkrumah as Founders Day.
