Vice President John Dramani Mahama on Friday appealed to the Military and other security agencies to conduct themselves professionally devoid of violence and acrimony during the general election in December this year.

He also advised them to become advocates of activities that would unite and educate the civilian public against misconduct and other forms of misbehavior before, during and after the elections.

Vice President Mahama made this appeal, when he addressed the annual West African Soldiers Social Activity (WASSA) of the Ghana Armed Forces in Accra.

WASSA is a socialization programme among the military to relax, enjoy together and to take stock of the past years and re-strategize for the current year.

It gives the Royal West African Frontier Force some respite from their exertions at the warfront and to renew their commitment and loyalty to their profession.

Vice President Mahama commended them for their efforts at keeping peace and venturing into farming, with particular mention of the Takoradi and Tamale Camps that won national farmers’ awards during the last programme in Agona Nsaba in the central Region, inspite of their numerous challenges.

He announced that government had contracted two companies to construct about 10,000 housing units for the Military and the Police in the coming years as a replacement to the aborted STX housing project.

The Vice President gave the assurance that government had embarked on a re-equipping project, where all the units would be provided with adequate equipment and logistics to enhance the performance of the Ghana Armed Forces.

He said under the re-equipping programme, government had provided more aircraft to the airforce, patrol boats to the Navy, while more equipment would be received before the end of this year.

Commodore Geoffrey Bilkro, Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces said their engagement in farming activities was their contribution towards achieving food sufficiency to further achieve the Millennium Development Goal aimed at eradicating hunger and poverty by 2015.

He commended government for the provision of ships for the Navy and some aircraft for the Airforce and hoped that most of the promises government made towards their welfare and development would be fulfilled to enhance their confidence levels to step up their performance.

Awards were given out to officers and men who excelled in their areas of operations, while selected ex-servicemen were also honoured for their contribution towards the growth and development of the forces. GNA

Mr Christian H. Wessels, a partner with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants (RBSC), says Ghana could grow her Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by about two to three percent per year.
This, he said, could be achieved through the commercial and Small and Medium Enterprise sector if they focus on reaching the highly untapped mass market.
Mr Wessels, who was interacting with journalists in Accra on Friday, said findings from a study by RBSC had shown that about $60 billion could be mobilised from more than 400 million low earners each year in sub-Saharan Africa.

He said: “Commercial banks can win millions of new customers in Africa by using integrated strategies for the mass market, especially as four out of five adults in Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries either have no access to banking services or prefer informal alternatives. This amounts to (more than) 400 million people who represent untapped potential for banks.”
He stated that banks in Ghana and the other countries needed to overhaul their business models to integrate the currently unbanked majority of the population into the economic system. He added that they would have to move from the larger cities and reach out to the remote areas with strategies that would be effective.

“What’s needed are integrated, large-scale strategies launched by commercial banks- strategies that offer affordable savings, payments and loan products through accessible, cost-effective sales channels. Experts from Roland Berger are convinced that commercial banks have the best chances of implementing profitable mass-market banking strategies and reaching millions of new clients,” says Mr Wessels.
This, he said, could be done through alternative sales options such as mobile channels as well as a widespread branch network, a robust IT platform for transactions and professional management.
He also noted that Africa could reach its goal of financial inclusion for the rapidly growing population in less than 10 years if the examples of its most successful retail banks, which had been growing at more that 50 per cent per year for a decade, was followed.

The key, he said was for banks to recognise that the business potential of low-income Africans went well beyond microcredit. In contrast to microfinance, an integrated cost-effective mass-market model should begin by showing low-income groups how to gain greater financial independence by building up assets.
Mr Wessels said the banking sector currently met only a fraction of the market’s demand for savings thus the challenge is to enable people in thinly populated areas, who worked long hours, to deposit and withdraw cash quickly and conveniently.

He said a reliable money transfer solution would help banks to expand their customer base and become a major source of revenue, allowing account holders to conduct simple transactions via their mobile phones, using cellular network offered in partnership with local retailers and mobile agents.
“Given the large number of cell phone users, even among low income Africans households, mobile banking is becoming a strategic must for banks, loans are likely to complement this offer, particularly for micro entrepreneurs and farmers” he noted.

Mr Wessels said African retail banks could learn from Brazilian, German and other African banks who had employed successful strategies to penetrate the low-income sector.
“Brazilian banks rely on simple products and a countrywide network of retailers including post offices, supermarkets, drugstores, gas stations, bakeries and small retail shops and have today reached more than 10 million previously unbanked clients using more than 160,000 representatives outside the traditional bank branch offices.”

“Ultimately, the local population, commercial banks and the economy as a whole can all benefit from the low-cost mass-market model,” he said.

The people of Kpone on Thursday threatened that they would not vote in December if the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) failed to release their lands to them.

At a joint press conference by the Kpone Traditional Council (KTC) and the Kpone Coalition of Youth Groups at Kpone, the people warned TDC that they would not tolerate any development of the disputed Kpone lands.
Addressing the press conference on behalf of the two groups, Mr Josiah Nuertey, their spokesperson, said it was regrettable that although Mr E.T. Mensah, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, assured the people of Kpone that not until the impasse between the TDC and the KTC was amicably resolved, all activities on the disputed Kpone lands should cease, TDC was flouting the directive with impunity.

He alleged that TDC had hidden behind legislation to give out large portions of Kpone lands for the construction of warehouses.
He recalled that in 1974, 1998 and 2006, TDC released three tranches of land to the people of Kpone, adding that these releases totaled 729 acres or 1,724 plots, out of about 17,000 acres government acquired from the people.

Mr Nuertey said in spite of the many sacrifices by the people of Kpone by virtually donating their land towards the development of Tema, the town was the only one along the coast that had no Senior High School (SHS).

It’s on record that some countries have been impressed by the SAGCOT model and want to adopt it. These include Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Mexico, Ghana and Indonesia. The Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives, Ms Sophia Kaduma, Bank of Tanzania Governor Prof Benno Ndulu and SAGCOT CEO Mr Dunstan Mruttu, are also in the strong team accompanying the president who flies out here on Saturday for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to attend the African Union (AU) summit.

Demi Moore was ‘convulsing, burning up’: 911 call

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Actress Demi Moore was convulsing and ‘burning up’ after taking an unidentified drug when emergency services were called earlier this week, according to the 911 call released on Friday.

During the 10-minute call friends tell the 911 operator that the 49-year-old, who split from her younger husband Ashton Kutcher in November after his alleged infidelity, has ‘been having some issues lately’.

‘She’s convulsing so we’re holding her down,’ said one of three people who take turns to speak to the operator, repeatedly asking him to send an ambulance urgently to her Beverly Hills home.

‘Demi, can you hear me?’ a woman says at one point, apparently talking to the star. ‘Yes, she’s squeezing hands,’ she then tells the operator, but adds: ‘She can’t speak.’
