Five corporate entities injected a combined GH¢10.38 million into Ghana’s Black Stars World Cup fundraising campaign on Wednesday, May 14, at the Ministry of Finance in Accra, as the national drive to raise 30 million dollars ahead of football’s biggest tournament continues to accelerate.
Ghana Gas Company Limited led the round with a GH¢5 million contribution, followed by Ecobank Ghana with GH¢3 million. Absa Bank Ghana donated GH¢1 million, Zijin Golden Ridge Limited contributed GH¢1.13 million, and OmniBSIC Bank made a symbolic presentation of GH¢250,000.
Deputy Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Black Stars World Cup Fundraising Committee Thomas Nyarko Ampem received the donations and called on companies that have already pledged to honour their commitments before the tournament, while welcoming additional contributions through the end of the month.
The donations form part of a campaign launched in March by President John Dramani Mahama with a 30 million dollar target. The initiative secured approximately 10 million dollars in pledges and donations on its first day alone, with contributions since arriving from institutions including Newmont Ghana, Guaranty Trust Bank Ghana, First Atlantic Bank and FirstBank Ghana.
The largest single contribution to date came from industrialist Ibrahim Mahama through his company Engineers and Planners, which released two million dollars on April 30 as the first instalment of a five million dollar pledge, deposited directly into a dedicated World Cup account at the Bank of Ghana to ensure transparency.
The fundraising effort has already produced a tangible outcome beyond preparation budgets. Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams confirmed on May 12 that Ghana has secured broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup (FIFA WC) following government and corporate support, ensuring live coverage of matches on selected media platforms across the country.
Resources raised will fund training camps, international friendly matches, team logistics, accommodation and tournament preparations ahead of Ghana’s fifth FIFA World Cup appearance. Ghana has been drawn into Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, a challenge the federation and its backers are preparing for seriously.
The Ministry of Finance will continue receiving donations every Thursday as the tournament approaches. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest edition in the tournament’s history following the expansion from 32 to 48 participating teams, raising both the stakes and the operational cost of competing. It will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
