The Ministry of the Interior has distanced itself from a 20% tax deduction applied to rent allowances paid to security services personnel, firmly placing responsibility on the Ministry of Finance (MoF).

In a press release dated Saturday, April 11, 2026, the Interior Ministry said its attention had been drawn to media reports suggesting it had effected the deduction, which it described as inaccurate.

“The Ministry wishes to clarify that it does not have the mandate to deduct tax from the rent allowance of security services personnel,” the statement read.

According to the Ministry, the deduction was carried out by the MoF at source, in line with existing statutory tax obligations under Ghana’s tax regime, and was not a decision made by the Interior Ministry.

The clarification comes weeks after the Interior Ministry settled outstanding 2025 rent allowance arrears for personnel of the Ghana Prisons Service, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), and announced that payments would henceforth be processed alongside monthly salaries.

The Ministry appealed for calm among affected officers, urging them to trust that the government remains committed to their welfare and would not shortchange any personnel.
