A cargo truck and a passenger bus collided in Ghana’s Volta Region early Tuesday, killing 15 people and injuring 25, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said.

The vehicles met head on at about 1:00 a.m. at Peki Tsame, near Peki Senior High School, jamming dozens of passengers inside the wreckage. Firefighters from the Peki station reached the scene and worked to free those trapped.

Officials said 40 people were aboard the two vehicles. Rescuers pulled out 25 survivors, among them 23 adults and two children, while the dead numbered nine males and six females.

“Sadly, 15 persons lost their lives,” the GNFS said.

The crash involved a Mercedes-Benz container truck travelling from Nkwanta to Accra and a Mercedes-Benz passenger bus heading from Battor to Kabiti in the Oti Region. The injured were taken to the Peki Government Hospital, and the bodies were handed to police and moved to the mortuary.

Police have opened an investigation, and the cause has not yet been established.

The disaster is the latest in a string of deadly crashes on Volta Region roads in recent weeks, with a fatal collision near Kpeve on 22 May among them. The fire service again urged drivers to obey traffic rules and curb speeding.
