DEMOCRACY IN DANGER:

APC Canada Chapter uses this opportunity to condemn the recent arrest of APC spokesman Mr. Lai Mohammed by the Nigerian Security Agents in Osun State. This act should be discouraged by all meaningful Nigerians. It is undemocratic, violates human rights and freedom of speech & expression. Having a viable opposition is not a taboo and the country should not be seen as turning into a one party state. Every Nigerian must question and confront issue such as this otherwise PDP will continue to get away with such acts of impunity which do not help our democracy.
Nigeria is not in the military era anymore; we are in a democracy, so arresting Lai Mohammed will not solve our problem as a nation. This is no more about APC or Lai Mohammed; it is about the future generation. Every individual regardless of his or her ethnic, social or political alignment is entitled to freedom of speech and expression, freedom of movement and should not be harassed or intimidated. What is happening now is totally unacceptable.
A healthy opposition is critical to a functioning democracy, providing an alternative voice and acting as a check on those in power. The arrest of APC spokesman, the intimidation of opposition candidates, supporters and the violent attacks on opposition public rallies have grave consequences for democratic participation in the future. The massive deployment of heavily armed troops in Osun State gubernatorial election stand to be condemned as this alone will disenfranchise voters.
Comrade Elas Abone,
on behalf of APC Canada Chapter.
