Electoral Commission (EC)
Electoral Commission (EC)

The Electoral Commission of Ghana is mandated to organize elections in Ghana. Of course to organize elections in any democratic system, there should be political parties.

The political parties in Ghana have come together to create an association with the EC with the good intention of helping to organize free and fair elections. The association is called IPAC.

Today IPAC only signifies tensions. Tension between the parties which have governed Ghana since the 4th republic ie NPP and NDC on one level, and tension between the party current in opposition and the EC on the other level.

Why between the party in opposition and the EC? because there is always the suspicion that the party in government is always in bed with the EC. This situation, like tradition, continues and this time to the extent that Ndc is alleged to have said that the EC is to be taken to the cleaners.

The EC in its wisdom has created a 21-Member Advisory Committee to assist EC in its work and assist in diffusing all the tensions in our electoral environment ie between the parties and EC and to create a solid foundation for EC against any stormy “cleaners’ agents”

The creation of the Advisory Committee has been welcomed with comfortable and uncomfortable comments from Ndc. The Leader and Creator of Ndc is of the view that it is a very welcome idea and this will help to instill confidence and eliminate all mistrust in the EC.

The flagbearer of Ndc is saying and is of the opinion that the Committee should be set aside altogether off EC so that when the tensions and the mistrusts escalate into chaos, the parties can call on the members to assist in solving the problems. So far I have not heard any comments from the Npp and the other parties. These commentaries are very disturbing.

The Proverb which says prevention is better than cure should guide us as a nation to move forward in our democratic process because it’s easier to stop something happening in the first place than to repair the damage after it has happened.

I salute all Ghanaians.
