Africa’s premier film industry event, the Durban FilmMart (DFM), will convene filmmakers, financiers, and distributors from July 18-21, positioning itself as the continent’s critical business nexus.
The 16th edition features a robust Pitch and Finance Forum across documentary, fiction, and animation tracks, offering direct access to global funding for selected African projects.
Central to the Industry Programme is the “Talking Cents” series tackling financial sustainability. Key sessions include “A New Black Film Ecosystem,” exploring global economic models for Black cinema, and “Blockchain Financing for Film,” examining emerging tech-driven investment. Private equity alternatives and the future of grant funding will be debated by representatives from Red Sea Film Fund, Sundance Institute, Ford Foundation, and others.
Distribution challenges take focus with “Distribution for Impact and Income,” analyzing commercial-social impact balance, and panels featuring Canal+, Paramount Africa, and MAD Solutions on global content accessibility. Dedicated initiatives like the Next Narrative Africa Fund and I.M.P.A.C.T programme spotlight pathways for emerging Black producers.
An expanded exhibition hub will host 30+ entities including Industrial Development Corporation, Netflix, Panavision, and national film commissions, facilitating co-productions, location scouting, and tax incentives. Principal funding comes from Durban Film Office and eThekwini Municipality, with partners including Berlinale Talents, Encounters Festival, and Hot Docs.
Business registration is required for participation. Details: durbanfilmmart.co.za
