An Accra Circuit Court has remanded one Kwasi Karikari, into police custody for possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.
Kwasi was alleged to have in his possession five wraps and quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charge and is however remanded to reappear on September 12.
Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patrick Morkeh told the court that the accused person is a trader, resides at Achimota and has a kiosk around the railway line at Achimota where he allegedly sells iced water.
He said on August 20, at about 3:20am, the Accra Regional Police, night patrol team detailed for patrol duties at Achimota and its environs spotted a group of young men in front of the accused person?s kiosk.
He said the team got down from the police vehicle and walked towards the scene to find out what was happening, but the young men on seeing the police took top their heels but Kwesi was arrested in front of the kiosk.
The prosecution said during interrogation, Kwesi stated that the kiosk belonged to him.
A search was conducted in the kiosk and a black polythene bag containing five wrappers and quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, one box of matches, one pair of scissors, three packets of 555 cigarette, one packet of Pall Mall cigarette, one packet of Ruthman cigarette, two lighters, two metal smoking pipes and an amount of GHc 603.00 were retrieved in the kiosk.
DSP Morkeh told the court that the accused person was escorted to the Accra Regional CID office for investigation, and in his caution statement he claimed ownership of the kiosk but denied ownership of the stuff.
