This was revealed Thursday in Kinshasa by DR Congo’s Planing Minister Georges Wembi.

mining“On Feb. 24, during EITI global conference in Lima, Peru, EITI International president Clare Short gave DR Congo a trophy for respecting EITI standards by divulging all the funds obtained from mining companies in DR Congo,” Wembi said.

The trophy that was won by DR Congo was on Monday presented to Prime Minister Matata Ponyo by the DR Congo delegation that went to Lima.

According to the 2014 EITI report, DR Congo received 2 billion U.S. dollars from its mining sector.

EITI requires that governments publish all the funds they receive in form of revenue, taxes and royalties from mining companies, and the latter also publish what they give to government.

The figures are written in EITI reports and disseminated to the public. This measure enables members of the public to have a better understanding of the real or potential contribution of the mining sector.

The mining sector is the leading contributor to DR Congo’s state budget, with 761.2 million dollars of government budget coming from the extractive sector while the petroleum sector contributes 380.1 million dollars. Enditem
