The people of Nkanfoa, on Friday, mounted road blocks and demonstrated to prevent refuse trucks from dumping refuse at the landfill site situated in the area.
The demonstrators, wearing red bands, said they would not allow any of the refuse trucks to dislodge its load until the site had been cleared of the existing rubbish and been fumigated with the entire community.
Mr Kwesi Gyan, spokesperson for the demonstrators, told the GNA in an interview that, they decided to protest after several complaints to the Metropolitan Assembly and the Zoomlion Waste Company to clear the refuse and fumigate the area fell on deaf ears.
He explained that landfill site was choked but the refuse trucks kept dislodging, thus bringing the waste very close to the town and endangering the health of the community members with the stench and smoke.
Mr Gyan said the community had been identified as the source of the cholera disease in the Metropolis with many of the cholera cases recorded at health facilities in the Metropolis coming from Nkanfoa.
?We will not wait for cholera to kill us all, he said.
He said even after the decongestion and fumigation exercises, they would only allow 20 refuse trucks to use the facility.
Mr Gyan explained that agreement that released the land for waste disposal included the establishment of a recycling plant, but after several years of usage, the plant had not been built, and that amounted to a breach of contract.
When the Metropolitan Environmental Officer, ?Metropolitan Environmental Officer, was contacted, he said his outfit on Friday afternoon began disinfecting the site and the residences of the cholera victims.
He said officials from Zoomlion would Saturday send bulldozers and excavators to clear the pile of refuse, which had been dumped very close to the community.
The GNA was, however, unsuccessful in its effort to reach the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ms Priscilla Arhin, for her reaction.
