The codification is expected to check criminal activities in the state
The Delta State Government has ordered the codification of all commercial vehicles operating in the state, as part of measures to check criminal activities, Transport Commissioner Benson Igbakpa said.
Igbakpa said that the codification entailed painting taxis with a unique colour, issuing unique numbers to the vehicles and carrying light bars on their roofs.
He said that the measures also included codifying the taxis on the basis of the cities they would be operating in and profiling them and their owners so that at a glance, a taxi and its owner could be identified.
He explained that the state government had given July 25 as deadline for all cabs to be painted blue and white.
Igbakpa stated that any taxi not painted after the deadline would be confiscated and the owner made to pay a fine for as many days as the vehicle remained in government custody.
The commissioner explained that the take-off of the construction of the trailer park at Ekwuoma, a community on Benin-Asaba Expressway, had been delayed by the reluctance of private investors to come in, but expressed the hope that work would soon start.
He also said that the directorate, in line with human capital development agenda of the state government and as part of job creation effort, had taken delivery of 1,250 tricycles to be used for transportation.
According to him, the state government had already taken delivery of 10 48-seater buses to ease workers? transportation problem in the state.
Igbakpa said that out of the five jetty projects awarded in 2011, four had been completed, adding that 130 boats for marine transport had also arrived and would soon be distributed.
