EU foreign ministers welcome arms deliveries to the Kurdish authorities in Iraq, although not all countries are in a position to supply these, says German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier at emergency talks in Brussels.

“The EU welcomes that individual countries will respond positively to requests by the security forces of the Kurdish government for support,” Steinmeier says, referring to a joint statement due to be issued shortly.

“Of course there was a long discussion,” the minister says, adding that some member states will not deliver arms, due to legal restraints or limited capacities.

He said that “eastern” member states were likely to supply equipment such as ammunition.
