Contractors in the country have up to 4th August, this year to complete and submit forms for their consideration for awards in the 2nd Contractors Awards.

The maiden award, which was held last year, was limited to building contractors but following keen interest, this year?s edition has been expanded to include road contractors.

Organizers of the second Contractors Excellence Awards include the Association of Building &Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana (ABCECG) and the Progressive Road Contractors Association (PROCA).

The event is to recognize and reward excellence in the construction industry.

In all, there are 11 award categories including the Contractor of the Year Award. The other categories include winners in each of the four classes of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors as well as the four classes of Road Contractors.

There will also be winners in the category of Corporate Social Responsibility for foreign and local contractors.

In an interview with CITY & BUSINESS GUIDE, chairman of the Technical Committee of ABCECG, Rockson Dogbegah explained that the Contractor of the Year, as well as the winners in the Corporate Social Responsibility categories, could either be a road or building and civil engineering contractor.

However, four categories will be reserved for Building and Civil Engineering Contractors while an additional four will be reserved for road contractors.

Mr. Dogbegah stated that any contractor or construction firm that enters the competition must score at least 60 percent based on the criteria in order to win.

?Even if you are the best in your category but you failed to score 60 percent, you will not be a winner otherwise we might end up rewarding substandard work. This is award for excellence,? Mr Dogbegah emphasized.

A well-developed and transparent criteria as well as scoring system have been developed as part of the application form. This is to ensure fairness and achieve the objective of promoting excellence.

A committee of experts, chaired by Engineer Leslie Awere Kyere, developed the criteria.

Last year, Jescan Construction Limited was adjudged the overall best Building Contractor, with Proko Ghana, Consar Ghana, Kumfranky and Malkna winning in other categories.

Plaques were presented to the winners while the overall winner took home a truck donated by BBC Paints.

With road contractors coming on board this time, it is anticipated that the competition would be extremely keen.

The event has been slated for September 21, this year at the Banquet Hall of the State House.
