The football world does not wallow in the past for long. So who will take over from Moyes?
Here is a list of potential candidates:
Jurgen Klopp – manager of Borussia Dortmund. Led the German club to two Bundesliga titles and the final of the Champions League last season. His team play quick tempo and attractive football, while he has endeared himself to the media with eccentric qualities.
Louis van Gaal – The Netherlands coach will be available after the World Cup. He has won league titles with Barcelona, Ajax and Bayern Munich.
Diego Simeone – The Argentine has been a revelation at Atletico Madrid – a tough team that plays quality football. They lead La Liga but will they lose their leader?
Where will the prophetic ‘Grim Reaper of Goodison Park’ show up next? The 2-0 defeat at former club Everton proved to be David Moyes’s last game in charge of the Manchester United.
This is what he said after the match:
“I think that everybody knows we are on track to make changes and do some different things. We are rebuilding.
“I understand it has not been good, I recognise it has not been good and it needs to be better.”
Well, he will now not be taking part in the rebuilding. So who will?
Dave Prince: Daft decision by Utd. Moyes had inherited the worst Utd squad in memory, how Ferguson managed to win last year is beyond me.
Scotty G: It’s Outrageous.. You hand a man a 6 year contract and you sack him less then a year later. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Stuart: Right decision unfortunately seemed out of depth & said wrong things to the media.

Here is how Manchester United broke the news on Twitter:
Man Utd: Manchester United announces that David Moyes has left the club. The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.
There you go. After 10 months in charge, David Moyes has been sacked as manager of Manchester United.
Speculation about his future intensified on Monday, with several news outlets reporting he was set to lose his job following the 2-0 defeat at his former club Everton the previous day.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville, who made over 600 appearances for the club, was asked about the latest situation at Old Trafford on Monday. His brother Phil is a coach at United.
This is what he told Sky Sports:
“Usually they don’t comment on anything, but they’re going to have to clarify this position quickly. They might have to break rank and do what they don’t normally do and make a statement pretty quickly.”
“If United wanted to end the speculation, it would be fairly easy. One public statement would do it even if commenting on rumour is not ‘the United way’. The alternative scenario is more complex. The New York Stock Exchange would have to be told given 10% of the club is listed there. A temporary replacement would need to be appointed until the end of the season. And then a permanent successor found following – Matt Busby’s brief second stint in charge apart – the shortest managerial reign at United since Walter Crickmer lasted only 43 games from November 1931 to July 1932.”

We will be focusing on the developments surrounding David Moyes’s future at Manchester United, but of course, there are other stories and events unfolding across the sporting world.
Chelsea play Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the iconic Vicente Calderon.
Striker Samuel Eto’o will miss the match with a knee injury, while midfielder Eden Hazard trained following a calf problem that had kept him out of action for nearly two weeks.
For all the latest team news, go to BBC’s Champions League page. The match is live on BBC Radio 5 live – kick-off 19:45 BST.
Eamonn Borg-Neal: Moyes needs time to rebuild the squad this summer, he trusted the previous regime too much. He needs to add his own flair.
Mark Telford: I watched the managerial merry-go-round at Newcastle. It’s stupid. Players should be held accountable and Moyes given time.
Agustine Pimentel: If Moyes is sacked then United need to look at its player and sack about 9 or 10 of them that have not performed!

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, 46, is one of the favourites to replace Moyes at Manchester United.
“Yesterday afternoon all the Manchester-based national newspaper journalists said David Moyes was getting the sack. Manchester United’s response: ‘No comment’. Former player Gary Neville feels that stance is unsustainable. He is not alone. Is it? Will Moyes turn up for duty as normal. Or, less than 10 months after his unveiling as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor on a six-year contract, will the Scot be asked to clear his desk?”
As the Grim Reaper stood among the Everton fans brandishing his scythe in the direction of Manchester United manager David Moyes, who would have thought that just a few hours later the Scot would face intense speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford.
Monday’s reports suggested that the former Everton boss was set to lose his job, having only taken over from Sir Alex Ferguson last summer.
The club denied that the 50-year-old had been sacked, but when asked whether he was leaving, added, “we do not comment on speculation.”
We will have all the latest developments right here on BBC Sportsday.
