CONSTITUENCY EXECUTIVE members of Berekum NPP are smelling a rat following the vetting of five parliamentary candidates who intend to contest the yet to be created Berekum East seat.
Addressing a press conference, Constituency Secretary, Peter Boampong said what was most disturbing was that the constituency executive members did not know any of the five contestants vetted by the regional executive.
He explained that the Berekum constituency executive members received a letter from the party?s national headquarters spelling out vetting modalities and further instructing that vetting should be conducted on October 9.
But unknown to the national executive members, the B/A executive members had already vetted the five contestants a week earlier; he said wondering why the regional executives would disregard instructions from the national executive.
According to Mr. Boampong, he was informed by someone who sat in during the so-called illegal vetting that only a few regional executive members took part in the process adding that the move would spell doom for the party because a peeved contestant may decide to go independent in order to destroy the chances of the NPP.
He reminded the NPP to look back as historians do at what happened to the party in 2008 when some candidates went independent and ruined its chances in the general elections and do something about the situation.
Investigations conducted by the Berekum constituency members, Boampong noted indicated that the regional secretary, regional women?s organizer, regional youth organizer as well as deputy regional secretary were not involved in the said vetting process and accused the regional party chairman of running a one-man show in the region.
In his view since nobody knew the five contestants in the constituency, it would be difficult for the executive members or any other member of the party in the constituency to campaign for them.
He warned that if anyone thought he could single handedly vet contestants and later bring them in to stand elections in the area, that person should think twice because such a candidate will not enjoy the cooperation of the people of Berekum East if the constituency is created.
