Is your hair very fine? Or is it thinning as you get older? Well, the answer to improving the look of your hair might be only a few clips away — clip in hair extensions, that is.

If placed in your hair properly, just a few hair extension clips can make your hair thick and can add lots of volume. It can take as little as five minutes, and can be easily undone at the end of the day or reset for a different look. The clips can be made of synthetic hair, but for the most part, natural hair is more desirable because it can be styled by things such as a flat iron without concern about severe damage.

For those women who are new to hair extensions, placing small one-piece clips is a good way to start. They can be blended with your own hair relatively easily by yourself while they still look realistic.

As you become more experienced with extensions, it will be easier to move to a larger clip systems that feature numerous “wefts” of various lengths and sizes that are clipped in at different locations on the scalp.

Before making a purchase, however, there are some terms you should know.

— Remy hair. It’s a term you’ll see a lot during your search for the best hair extensions for you. Remy is a reference to a process in which the strands of hair in a clip are placed with the cuticles in same direction. It’s believed that the process makes the hair less susceptible to tangles and keeps it shinier. Beware, however, because the term “remy” is overused in the hair extension industry. Just because particular clips are touted as remy hair doesn’t mean that they are.

— Virgin hair.

These are real human hair stands are not processed or colored in any way.

— Synthetic hair. Indeed, not all hair extensions are made from real hair. Synthetic strands, which are typically made from Toyokalon fibers or Kanekalon, are much less costly and they can come in countless colors and textures. Most synthetic hair can’t handle treatment with a flat iron, curling iron or hair dryer because the hair will be damaged by the heat. Some people believe synthetic hair is more prone to tangles. But it is also is not affected by the weather, such as a humid day when human hair can frizz.

Aside from deciding to either real human hair or synthetic, there are numerous other considerations before buying clip in extensions. There’s hair length and color, amount of curl and whether to go with a one-piece system or a multi-piece one.

Systems that eight to 10 pieces, and sometimes more, can be difficult for an inexperience person to deal with. These products come with wefted pieces with varying widths. Experts recommend user apply the clips, working bottom to top, with the smaller clips and getting bigger while working higher on the head. In this case, practice makes perfect.
