Chelsea Flourish

An own goal from Ivan Marcano and a second from Willian was enough for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea to seal a 2-0 victory over FC Porto in their last Champions League Group G match at the Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

With Roman Abramovich seated on his seat facing Stamford Bridge’ West stand and perhaps ready to finally wield his axe on Mourinho should the Blues go down, but fate, however, smiled at the Portuguese manager in the 12th minute when the host broke the deadlock through an own goal.

Belgian winger Eden Hazard released Diego Costa behind the Porto defence, but the Spaniard’s shot was blocked by Iker Casillas only to rebound off Ivan Marcano into his own net.

The ball was cleared off from the post, but replays showed that the ball had crossed the line before Maicon cleared it.

The 2012 Champions League winners had lost to newly promoted Bournemouth going into this match and the odds were heavily against them but though the Blues did play to the satisfaction of the pundits they proved that they are still a force to reckon with in Europe.

Chelsea’s most outstanding player this season, Willian extended the lead for the Blues in the 52nd minute. Eden Hazard played in the afro haired Brazilian who beat Casillas from the near post.

Eden Hazard has played 26 matches for Chelsea this season without scoring, but his performance on Wednesday was his best this season. The Belgian shot flashed off the post late in the game.

Porto enjoyed much of the possession in both halves, but they couldn’t create clear cut opportunities and the few that came their way were equally saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea topped the Group G ladder with 13 points, followed by Dynamo Kiev with 11 points.
