The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday in Lagos said it had commenced direct stakeholders engagement to enhance public awareness about its cashless policy.
Head of Corporate Communications of the CBN, Okorofor Ugochukwu, said that the apex bank would also embark on further sensitisation to the cashless policy in Abuja and five other states in July.
He said that the CBN?s latest strategies were to ensure that the cashless initiative for Nigeria was entrenched.
The CBN Deputy Governor for Operations, Tunde Lemo, had at a meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund disclosed plans to introduce the cashless policy to five more states.
At the meeting which held in the U.S. in February, Lemo said that the CBN planned to publicise the policy in Ogun, Anambra, Abia, Kano and Rivers States.
“We have started direct stakeholders engagement on the cashless policy to further make the public more aware of it.
“The CBN had been organising programmes and also engaging the media to sensitise people to the policy.
“Even banks and other financial institutions are on board our new drive to make Nigeria a cashless society,“ he said.
Ugochukwu, however, said that it was the job of the CBN to provide the infrastructure for an accelerated attainment of the policy ideals.
“The task of the apex bank is getting the policy out and ensuring that people take an advantage of it,“ he said.
He said although the takeoff of the implementation of the policy in Lagos faced some challenges, the apex bank would not be deterred to make the country a cashless system.
“For the fact that there were hitches in Lagos does not mean that the CBN should not push ahead,“ he said.
