About eight persons suspected?to be members of a group calling?itself boko haram, terrorising the?Zongo community of Akyem Ofoase?in the Akyemansa District of the Eastern Region, have been arrested?by the Oda Divisional Police Command.
The group?s brutalities came to?the notice of the police on December?16, 2014 after some of their victims?reported their ordeal to them (police).
According to Deputy regional?Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner?of Police (ACP) James?Azuma Abass Abaah, two of the suspects?had been discharged unconditionally?for lack of evidence.
The police chief was speaking at a?media briefing on Wednesday?December 24, 2014.
He said the six others ? with ages?ranging from 21 to 35 years, had
been granted police enquiry bail to?report periodically to the oda?police.
ACP Azuma Abass Abaah?debunked reports and public perceptions?that a branch of the Nigerian?Islamic extremist group ? Boko?Haram ? had been formed in the?country. He explained that a group?of young men who claimed they?wanted to crack down on indiscipline?amongst ladies at ofoase,?operated under the name Boko?Haram.
They usually accosted ladies?who loitered at night and beat them?up for either roaming at night or?dressing in a manner they (Boko?Haram) considered offensive or?indecent.
The security capo said the police?would do all within their power to?arrest other suspects connected with?the group while they investigate the?matter to its logical conclusion and?ensure that justice is done.
He warned others nurturing?such thoughts to rethink since the?national Constitution does not mandate?any citizen to take the law into?their own hands because they are?not the ones to determine which?dressing is provocative or what time?one should go to bed.
He stressed that anyone arrested?in connection with such abusive acts?would not escape the long arms of?the law.
ACP Abaah assured Ghanaians?that there was no cause for alarm?since the behaviour of the so-called??ofoase Boko Haram? does not in?any way match the terrorist Nigerian?terrorist group ? Boko Haram?s?extremism.
