Nigerian crossdresser Bobrisky took to Instagram this week to rebuke Nigerians for fixating on celebrity gossip while a teacher was murdered in Oyo State, calling out the country’s misplaced priorities in the face of a worsening security crisis.
The attack, which occurred on May 16, saw armed bandits invade three schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area in Oyo State, abducting pupils, students and teachers. The victim, later identified as mathematics teacher Michael Oyedokun, was subsequently killed by the abductors.
Bobrisky, who relocated to the United Kingdom in 2024, posted a message on Instagram questioning how Nigerians could follow a celebrity marriage scandal while a fellow citizen was being killed in captivity. The crossdresser specifically pointed to the controversy engulfing veteran broadcaster Frank Edoho, his estranged wife Sandra Onyenucheya, and singer Chike as an example of misplaced national attention.
Nigerian social media became consumed this week by explosive allegations linking Chike to the collapsed marriage of Edoho, triggering a fierce cycle of leaked audio recordings, viral posts and widespread debate across X and Instagram.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that 18 primary school pupils, seven secondary school students and seven teachers were abducted during the Oriire attack. A total of 46 persons remained unaccounted for, including teachers and students, according to community sources.
“A teacher was beheaded, and all we talk about is Frank Edoho,” Bobrisky wrote, in a post that drew swift reactions online.
President Bola Tinubu, responding to the crisis, directed the Inspector-General of Police to lead a technology-driven rescue operation, involving tactical units and the Intelligence Response Team, to secure the release of the remaining hostages and apprehend those responsible.
Bobrisky’s outburst reflects a growing frustration among Nigerians who feel that public attention is consistently drawn away from institutional failures and security breakdowns by celebrity controversies. The post amplified an already charged national debate about priorities, grief and accountability.
