Ghana’s Black Starlets return to the continental stage today for the first time in nearly a decade, opening their Africa Cup of Nations Under-17 campaign against hosts Algeria at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, with kickoff scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
The two-time champions last appeared at the tournament in 2017 in Gabon, where they finished as runners-up. Their return places them in a demanding Group D alongside defending champions Senegal and South Africa, making every point in the group stage critical.
Head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has struck a confident tone ahead of the opener, insisting his squad has developed the balance and togetherness required to compete at this level.
“Technically we have quality, tactically we are improving steadily, and mentally the players are showing maturity,” Ogum told the Confederation of African Football’s official platform, adding that these qualities give his side confidence against any opponent in the tournament.
The former Asante Kotoko trainer also highlighted the team’s collective spirit, noting that the players understand each other well and are prepared to fight for one another on the pitch.
Following today’s clash against Algeria, Ghana will face Senegal and South Africa to complete their group stage fixtures. Beyond the continental title, the Black Starlets have their eyes on securing qualification for the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Under-17 World Cup later this year, giving the campaign added national significance.
