Billionaire investor Wesley Edens has been publicly identified as the alleged victim in a federal blackmail case in which a woman is accused of threatening to release intimate videos and photographs unless he paid more than one billion dollars.

Edens, who co-founded Fortress Investment Group and co-owns the National Basketball Association’s Milwaukee Bucks, was named as Victim-1 in proceedings against Changli Luo, also known as Sophia Luo. A spokesperson for Edens confirmed his identity to the Wall Street Journal after court documents were unsealed.

Prosecutors allege that Luo first met Edens in 2023 and later threatened to publicly release videos and images reportedly showing the two engaged in sexual activity. The alleged threats continued over several months and escalated to include contact with members of Edens’ family and outreach to his business investors, according to federal authorities.

Luo was indicted last year and charged with blackmail and destruction of records. She was released on a $500,000 bond and remains under house arrest ahead of a trial scheduled later this year. Edens is expected to testify in those proceedings.

His spokesperson said Edens reported the matter to law enforcement out of concern for his personal safety and that of his family, adding that “the indictment speaks for itself” regarding the charges against the defendant.

Luo’s legal team has moved to have the charges dismissed, arguing the original encounter between the two parties was inappropriate and aggressive, and that their client was seeking justice and compensation rather than attempting extortion.
