Massive reptile comes ashore immediately after ceremony atSt. Croix, lays eggs, and returns to sea; couple hopes it’s a positive omen
A couple whose recent Caribbean beach wedding was crashed by a giant sea turtle is hoping that the bizarre intrusion was a positive omen.
?We?ve been joking that our wedding got crashed? by a sea turtle,? stated Reddit user In3, who appears to be either the groom or the bride.
The turtle, described in the comments of the Reddit thread as a leatherback, was considerate enough to wait until just after the ceremony before emerging from the St. Croix surf to steal the spotlight.
?Immediately after the ceremony during cocktail hour everyone is mingling and sipping their beverage of choice when I overhear one of my friends say with a good bit of excitement in his voice: ?Look at that turtle!?? In3 explained.
?I break conversation and turn around to see this monster coming out of the surf. It came ashore, circled around digging a hole, laid its eggs on the beach, covered them back up, and rolled back out into the ocean. Now that?s a memorable event at your wedding.?
The couple was informed by locals that the wedding had received an unusual fertility blessing by the turtle.
?My friend says we?re having 12 kids now. We better not be,? In3 continued.
Leatherback turtles are the largest turtles on the planet, measuring up to 7 feet and reaching weights in excess of 2,000 pounds.
Their evolutionary roots, according to National Geographic, date back more than 100 million years, and the reptiles were once prolific throughout the world?s oceans, but are now endangered.
So it was a rare treat indeed, and possibly a splendid omen for the newlyweds.
But of course, only time will tell.
