The Bayero University Kano (BUK) is to phase out all diploma and other sub-degree programmes being run by the university with effect from this year.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abubakar Rashid, made this known in Kanoon Wednesday while briefing newsmen on the 30th Convocation of the university scheduled for June 23.
Rashid said in line with the new policy, no new students would be admitted for any diploma and other sub-degree programmes, this year in the university.
According to him, the university will now focus on its primary mandate of producing qualified graduates and post graduates students.
He, however, announced the establishment of a new Institute of Continued Education which would run open and distance learning as well as part time degree programmes.
This, he said, was aimed at giving opportunity to those who were employed to come on part time to acquire degrees in various fields of study.
According to him, the council and senate have approved the establishment of Centre for Quranic Studies to assist in finding solution to Almajiri system of education in the north.
Rashid said 14, 521 graduates would receive degrees at the occasion.
He said 107 graduates would receive doctorate degrees as against 2,533 master degrees, while others would be awarded first degrees for 2010/ 2011 and 2011/ 2012 sessions.
He, however, said the convocation would be low-keyed as no pre-convocation lecture, chancellor?s dinner and Award of Honorary Degrees during the occasion.
