Following Bauchi State students poor performance in the last Senior Secondary School certificate examination, the state government has announce plans to verify credentials of teachers in the state in order to improve standard of education.

It would be recalled that the state came second to the last with 5.28 %. The state commissioner of Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad Aminu disclosed this yesterday in Bauchi during a stakeholders meeting to re- examine the performance of students in the last WAEC exercise, where he reiterated the determination of the state government to verify the teachers, with the aim of flushing the unqualified teachers from both Primary and secondary school in the state.

He said the meeting identified nonchalant attitude of parents, less commitment from teachers, inadequate supervision, influx of over 3million displaced persons to the state as well as the engagement of unqualified teachers, as some factors responsible for the poor performance of students in the state despite the huge investment of the government in that direction.

?We have already sent our recommendation to the Governor seeking for his consent and approval in order to chart the way forward. The Minimum qualification of Teaching is National Certificate of Education, NCE, but many diploma holders were employed as teachers and you cannot expect quality from them.? He said.

The Commissioner stated that once they secured the approval for the verification, the ones that will be send for training will be sent, while others will be redeployed to the office of the Head of Service for redeployment to relevant offices to suite their studies.

He added that the meeting recommended for the opening of more zonal offices to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation performance of both teachers and students aimed at improving the standard of education in the state.
