Immunisation in Northern Nigeria

The Gamawa Local Government Council in Bauchi State is embarking on a weekly immunisation programme to fight polio.

This programme is in conjunction with donor agencies to stem the upsurge of the Wild Polio Virus (WPV) recently discovered in the area.

Emmanuel Katuga, a World Health Organisation Consultant in charge of Gamawa, Zaki and Itas Gadau local government areas, made this known on Sunday.

He said three WPV cases were reported in Gamawa Local Government Area in April, attributing it to neglect on the part of immunisation officials.

Katuga said the weekly immunisation will complement the National Monthly Routine immunisation.

He added that the measure will enable immunisation officials to reach out to villages around the affected area.

The weekly immunisation is being funded by both the state and local governments, to ensure that communities are immunised against polio and other diseases.

He gave the assurance that the affected areas would be evenly covered because of the number of officials assigned and the pace at which the immunisation is being carried out.
