Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a 5-1 defeat to Austria in a Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Series friendly at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna on Friday, March 27, a result that exposed persistent defensive vulnerabilities as the team’s 2026 World Cup countdown intensifies.

Austria set the tempo in the 12th minute when Marcel Sabitzer converted from the penalty spot to open the scoring. The Black Stars held their own for much of the first half, but the second period proved damaging. Michael Gregoritsch doubled Austria’s advantage in the 51st minute with a header from a corner kick, before Stefan Posch made it 3-0 eight minutes later with a composed finish that cut through Ghana’s defensive structure.

Captain Jordan Ayew provided a brief moment of hope, finishing neatly in the 77th minute from an assist by Ibrahim Sulemana to pull one back for Ghana. The response lasted two minutes. Carney Chukwuemeka restored Austria’s three-goal cushion almost immediately, and Nicolas Seiwald wrapped up the scoring in the 90th minute with a powerful finish from the edge of the box to complete the rout.

The defeat was compounded by an unsettling build-up. Vienna police opened an investigation after a robbery targeted the Black Stars at their team hotel in the days before the match. Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams confirmed that the CCTV cameras at the hotel were not operational during the incident, a matter now under thorough police review. The stolen items included $2,250 in cash belonging to management committee members and two Rolex watches belonging to players. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) escalated the matter to local authorities and has been seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding the theft.

Head coach Otto Addo, speaking ahead of the match, framed the two European friendlies as a deliberate stress test, saying: “If we want to be competitive at the World Cup, we need to suffer now against Austria and Germany. These are Round of 16 level matches. It’s an incredible opportunity for the players to show who is really ready.”

The Black Stars now travel to Stuttgart, where they face Germany on Monday, March 30. Both fixtures form Ghana’s final March preparation window ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Ghana are drawn in Group L and open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, followed by England in Boston on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
