The raining season is about to set in, but it seems city authorities are waiting to be overwhelmed, before the floods begin to take action.
A visit by The Chronicle? to the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) construction site on the odaw river indicate a time bomb, which will soon explode in the face of residents in the area, if steps are not taken to de-silt the drains in the area .
The area, known to be one of the flood prone areas in the capital is strikingly unkempt, with the main drains filled with solid and plastic waste.
Some residents in the area blame the situation on the constructors, who they claim had blocked part of the drain for their construction project.
The Chronicle’s estimation of the situation at the area indicates that the smallest magnitude of rain would wreck havoc on the surrounding areas.
When The Chronicle contacted some of the workers at site, they declined comment, but those who want to remain anonymous said they that measures have been put in place to prevent a flood situation.
They said the accumulation of the plastic at the one side of the drain was to prevent solid waste from preventing the free flow of water.
The contractors explained that the system adopted would prevent refuse from getting stuck under the bridge.
They said it was not part of their duty to de-silt and that it was the responsibility of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
Some residents also complained of mosquitoes and malaria infections in the area, as a result of the state of the drain.
