Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) Bantamweight Champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko says his desire to placate his broken-hearted fans has informed his decision to fight on home soil.
Agbeko lost his crown to his Mexican opponent last year and believed picking up the pieces from where he began (Accra) is the best of decisions.
“I broke many hearts as a result of my loss, so I decided to come home and start all over, hence the decision to fight in Accra,” he said in an interview during his birthday celebration in Accra last Saturday.
“This is where I started and I draw a lot of inspiration from my Accra fans. I am working seriously in the gym to put up an impressive performance.
“I can’t wait for that bout, I just want to prove a point after that disappointing performance. After the Accra bout, we will consider moving to the super bantamweight division.
“I need the home support, and I will make sure I wouldn’t commit the blunders that accounted for the poor show the other time. I know how the fans are if you fail to impress,” added Agbeko.
Agbeko will face a Filipino opponent Michael Domingo on May 26, for their International Boxing Organization (IBO) Bantamweight fight at the Accra Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Ghanaian boxer has said mounting the ring with Abner Mares for the third time remains his cherished dream.
