Tema Police Arrest Seven Suspects in Ashaiman Robberies

The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals linked to armed robberies at Ashaiman’s Sakaska Park and Dagomba Junction.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for Tema Region, confirmed the suspects targeted multiple victims at gunpoint, stealing mobile phones, electronics, and cash.

According to the police statement, stolen items included an iPhone 12 Pro Max, Samsung A03 Core, Infinix Hot 40i, and a backpack containing a Dell laptop with accessories, power bank, and undisclosed cash. Initial arrests occurred at the scene through public assistance, with Moses Kwame Helu and Jonathan Osabutey apprehended immediately after the attacks.

Subsequent intelligence operations led to five additional arrests. Robert Amekudzi and an unnamed juvenile were found possessing the stolen backpack and laptop, while Bernard Dzumador and another juvenile had the iPhone and Samsung phone in their custody.

All suspects remain in police custody pending further investigation and will face court proceedings. The Police Service commended public cooperation during the arrests and reaffirmed its commitment to security in Ashaiman and surrounding communities.

The operation reflects ongoing efforts to combat street crime in Greater Accra, where coordinated police-public responses have increased arrest rates for robbery incidents over the past year.

These appointments reflect the Perseus Mining group’s long-term commitment to nurturing internal talent and strengthening operational leadership across its mining assets.

Daniel Egya-Mensah, currently General Manager of the Edikan Gold Mine, will assume the newly created role of Chief Executive Officer of PMGLC, having joined the company in 2023.

With over 25 years of experience in the mining industry, Daniel has held senior leadership roles at Newmont, AngloGold Ashanti and Teberebie Goldfields.

Gold constitutes 48.6% of Ghana’s total foreign exchange reserves, significantly above the international average and reflecting strategic reliance on the asset for value preservation.

The United States maintains the largest reserves (8,133.5 tonnes, 78.6% of reserves), followed by Germany (3,381.1 tonnes, 78.0%) and Italy (2,451.8 tonnes, 74.9%). Among emerging economies, Russia (2,339.6 tonnes), China (2,262.4 tonnes), and India (822.1 tonnes) have expanded holdings substantially.

In Africa, Ghana ranks fifth behind Algeria (173.6 tonnes), Libya (146.7 tonnes), Egypt (125.6 tonnes), and South Africa (125.4 tonnes), but ahead of Morocco (22.1 tonnes) and Nigeria (21.5 tonnes). This positions Ghana as Africa’s top gold producer with significant reserve allocation.

The World Gold Council’s 2025 survey confirms a global trend of central banks increasing gold holdings, particularly in emerging markets seeking diversification from traditional reserve currencies amid geopolitical uncertainty.

Gold prices exceeding $3,300 per ounce have increased the market value of Ghana’s reserves.

Ghana produced 3.7 million ounces of gold in 2024, maintaining its position as Africa’s largest gold producer per the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

The report reveals 73% of reserve managers expect the dollar’s global reserve share to decline within five years, while 43% plan to boost gold holdings in the next year – the highest intent since the survey began.

“Gold is being repositioned not just as a traditional store of value, but as a strategic reserve asset amid shifting global power dynamics,” the report states, attributing this assessment to its findings. Emerging Markets and Developing Economies (EMDEs) lead this shift, prioritizing gold’s lack of counterparty risk, crisis resilience, and geopolitical neutrality.

Central bank gold purchases have exceeded 1,000 tonnes annually for three consecutive years, more than doubling the 2010-2020 average. Many EMDE institutions now source gold domestically from artisanal miners alongside market purchases. The euro and Chinese renminbi are viewed as potential alternatives, though confidence remains mixed compared to gold’s sanction-proof attributes.

Gold represents 15.5% of global foreign reserves as of Q1 2025, its highest share since 1990 according to International Monetary Fund data.

Ghana has initiated a two-year carbon credit pilot programme targeting smallholder farmers in five northern districts to reduce emissions through sustainable land practices.

Running from May 2024 to April 2026 in Kumbungu, Tolon, Savelugu, Garu, and Nadoli districts, the £134,000 UK Innovate-funded project develops a farmer-led carbon and biodiversity credit trading platform according to project documents.

Core activities include tree planting, compost production, minimum tillage, and clean cookstove adoption. “This combines climate action with socio-economic empowerment,” Suhiyini stated, attributing the objective to his project leadership.

The revenue model allocates 80% of carbon credit earnings directly to farmers, with 10% for community development and 10% for Ghana Standards Authority monitoring. A commercial phase (2026-2076) aims to sequester 37 million tonnes of CO2, projecting potential revenue exceeding $64.5 billion over 50 years based on current carbon market valuations.

Gender inclusion targets 60% female participation, particularly supporting women in shea value chains. The programme also promotes agricultural biomass conversion to fuel briquettes to reduce deforestation. Suhiyini appealed for $1.54 million additional funding from government and international institutions like World Bank for national scaling, noting potential for land reclamation in mining-degraded areas.

Ghana’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution targets 64 million tonnes CO2 equivalent reduction by 2030, with land-use changes representing 37% of its mitigation strategy per Climate Watch data.

Ashanti Police Arrest Vehicle Theft Syndicate, Murder Suspect in Separate Operations

Ashanti Regional Police have apprehended five individuals linked to a vehicle theft syndicate targeting victims leaving banks in Kumasi, according to an official statement.

The group used Toyota Highlanders with false registration plates to trail victims before stealing cash from parked vehicles. After months of surveillance by the Police Intelligence Directorate and Intelligence Video Surveillance system, officers traced two suspect vehicles leading to the June 19 arrests of Russell Ekenze, Francis Friday, and Linus Agwazie.

Suspects confessed to multiple thefts during interrogation and named accomplice Cosmas Maduabuchukwu as currently at large. Gifty Ozurumbam and Gladys Ibrahim were additionally detained for allegedly obstructing investigations. Five suspects—primarily Nigerian nationals and one Ghanaian—are in custody pending court proceedings, with collaboration ongoing with Greater Accra Police.

In a separate case, Nkawie Divisional Police arrested William Ofori Atta, 29, on June 21 in connection with the May 26 robbery and murder of Radiance Filling Station employee Emmanuel Kwabena Boakye, 28, in Mpasatia. A coordinated operation involving cyber crime units and regional commands led to Ofori Atta’s apprehension at 5:30 a.m. in Kukuom, Ahafo Region. Police recovered a mobile phone believed to belong to the victim during the arrest.

Deputy Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, Ashanti Regional Public Affairs Head, confirmed both investigations continue and commended inter-unit collaboration. The police urged public assistance with ongoing cases.

Ghana recorded 2,074 vehicle theft incidents in 2024, with targeted cash robberies representing 18% of major crimes according to the Ghana Police Service annual report.
