A National Security Threat

Alfred Agbesi Woyome

The implications of the Woyome saga are multifaceted. There are a few persons who would rather the subject is muffled because, as they put it, the deed has already been done.

We cannot agree with such a selfish position and ask that all stones be turned to unearth the truth without unhelpful emotions and wild goose chasing.

A couple of days ago, further issues were raised to the effect that part of the money went to a certain Castle account and other places. Many who heard the disclosures by Hon. Kennedy Agyepong could not subdue their surprise.

It is a dangerous precedent which calls for an immediate attention so that a repeat would not be entertained in the future. This is a stain on an already wobbly Presidency whose minders have failed to live up to expectation.

Various commentaries have been made by an assortment of political commentators, with some seeking to douse the negative implications of the scandal with mostly unfounded assertions.

It is one national issue whose repercussions transcend political parties. That is why we ask that when we are dealing with the subject, all of us should do so with the national interest as the driving impetus.

The Woyome saga as a national security issue affects everything about Ghana and that is why we must exhibit utmost sincerity when discussing it. The civil servants and politicians who played a role in the whole affair have disappointed their country in the most obscene fashion.

They have all compromised the trust reposed in them by the good people of this country to keep watch over their interests. There is an element of conspiracy in the matter to defraud the nation, regardless of the implication. Therein lies an aspect of the national security implication of the financial aberration.

The remuneration they are receiving from the public kitty notwithstanding, these men went ahead to turn their backs against the interest of their country.

The opportunity cost of the money which left the coffers of the state can only be appreciated from the many undone projects scattered across the country including schools which still operate under trees.

Our state institutions can easily be compromised to the detriment of our national security: The Woyome saga has taught us lessons which we ignore at our peril as a nation. We should find a means of making a recurrence of such rape impossible in the future.

Insulating such vital institutions from the fiendish manouvres of bad Ghanaians should be a major project of the nation.

There should be no sacred cows in this issue.
