60 prisoners escape from Abidjan prison

Sixty prisoners on Sunday escaped from the main prison in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire's economic capital, prison authorities told Xinhua.

Eyewitnesses said the prisoners managed to escape from the detention facility by climbing on a wall of one of the main buildings in the prison.

Judicial authorities promised to institute an inquiry to find out clear circumstances for this massive prison break and identify those who were responsible.

A few months ago, several Cote d’Ivoire towns such as Abidjan, Bouake in central, Korhogo in the north and Agboville in the south witnessed massive prison breaks that forced the country’s authorities to take more vigorous measures to end the problem.

The government decided to reinforce security around all prisons in the country by training and deploying over 2,000 prison guards who were mostly demobilized ex-combatants. Enditem
