THE Ghana?Interbank?Payment?and?Settlement Systems?(GhIPSS), announced more than 25 shopping centres in Accra and Tema metropolis have deployed gh-link hybrid?Point of Sale?(PoS) terminals to enable the public to use local ATM cards to shop.
GhIPSS?Chief Executive, Archie Hesse, said some of the centres include the various branches of Shoprite, Evergreen Super Market in Tema, Palace shopping centres, Airport Shell, and Quick Pick,? East Cantonment Pharmacy, Azmera and X-men grooming centre.
Also Hesse noted that customers of more than 10?financial institutions?could use their local ATM cards to shop at these POS terminals. These PoS devices also accept all e-zwich cards introduced by the GhIPSS some few years.
The banks include?Ghana Commercial Bank, UT Bank, Merchant Bank, Bank of Africa, Zenith Bank and Royal Bank.
While?microfinance institutions?such as First National, Ezi?Savings and Loans, and ABII National Savings and Loans Company also hooked on to the gh-link.
The introduction of the gh-link?PoS terminals?enables ATM card holders to purchase items ranging from basic commodities, clothing, mobiles, watches, to automobiles without holding physical cash.
All these form part of efforts to increase the use of non-cash?based systems?of payments as Ghana strides to migrate into a cash-lite economy, Hesse stated.
Previously only holders of international cards as well as e-zwich card could make payments via the?terminals.
That changed with the introduction of the gh-link PoS devices last year.
According to GhiPSS, uptake has been positive.
