Defence Network For Democracy (DEFNED) has critically monitored with great concern the upsurge of Human Trafficking (modern day slavery) which is now a booming and lucrative business to Traffickers and their Intermediaries within the past three years in this Country, is due to the lackadaisical approach and the high sense of insensitivity on the part of the Government under the leadership of H.E President John Dramani Mahama to wage war against Human Trafficking in the country, which is a serious Human Rights violation under Article 16 (1) and (2) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.
Indeed, since the enactment of the Human Trafficking Act 694 of 2005, the fight against Trafficking in Persons from 2005 to the year 2012 was highly impressive mainly due to the high sense of sensitivity coupled with a more decisive and robust measures put in place to end the impunity of internal and external Trafficking in Persons based on the incontrovertible evidence available in this country.
However, the present Government in the past three years has not demonstrated the political will to end the impunity of all forms of slavery in the Country which also remains a serious National Security issue that requires urgent action by the State.
Moreover, DEFNED is hereby calling on the Office of the President to as a matter of urgency take decisive and robust steps in implementing the recommendations of the 2016 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report released by the U.S Department of State in Washington D.C to the latter, so as to redeem the good image of Ghana on the international scene.
Furthermore, DEFNED wish to further remind the Government under the leadership of H.E President John Dramani Mahama of its Constitutional obligation under the 1992 Constitution to protect the Ghanaian people from all forms of slavery and further take steps to secure the wellbeing of the People.
In the light of the above, DEFNED wish to really applaud and commend the U.S Government for its continuous lead campaign against Trafficking in Persons (TIP); modern day slavery across the globe which is a serious Human Rights violation against humanity in general.
Meanwhile, DEFNED further wish to express its utmost gratitude and unflinching support to the U.S Government and the U.S Embassy in Ghana for the aggressive lead campaign in the fight against Trafficking in Persons (TIP); modern days slavery in the Ghanaian Society.
DEFNED is strongly calling on all Ghanaians to wholeheartedly support the U.S Government, UN and its Agencies, EU and the International Community in ending the impunity of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) in Ghana and the world at large
