Nduom tells Mills: Peace-seeking not by mere words

The leader of the Progressive People?s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom is asking President Mills to back his peace messages with action because...

Well said Dr. Nduom!

PRESIDENTIAL aspirant of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has made it clear that when he is voted to become the President of the Republic of Ghana he will stop what he describes as ‘torturing of school children’ on Independence Day. According to him, an Nduom presidency under a PPP government will make the day  exciting and an enjoyable one by “turning it into an opportunity to promote patriotism.” DR. Nduom made the remark against the backdrop that the celebration of our independence day has become nothing more than an occasion for our soldiers, police, prison officers, state agencies and school children to bear the brunt of the scorching heat of the sun for several hours. Dr. Nduom goes on to make another vital observation: “The day has also become one for people whose party is in power to show off while those in opposition frown as they look on.” IN fact, we at Today agree intoto with Dr. Nduom. And we think that it is high time we took Dr. Nduom’s submissions into consideration. Subjecting our security personnel, government workers and school children to such pain is not the right thing to do on such an important day in the history of our country. AGAIN, we agree with Dr. Nduom when he asserts that 6th March must bring us all together and should not become one for partisan considerations.  “The sense of belonging to one nation with one people having a common destiny has been lost,” Dr. Nduom lamented.  “And we have turned to our school children and their teachers to march and march and march as if that will pay for the divisive acts of our leaders in power.  This must stop.  I have the will to stop all of this as President of the Republic.” YES! Today strongly believes that the practice where our children and security personnel are allowed to march for several hours in the hot sun must STOP immediately! If for nothing at all we can take a cue in how some countries observe and celebrate their independence day. “For one day, all citizens in these countries sit together, drink and eat together and enjoy the fact that they are citizens of a country they are proud of.  Ghanaians can become proud of their country too if progressive leadership encourages the right attitude and behaviour,” Dr. Nduom noted. TO this end, Dr. Nduom submitted: “I will encourage all of our people to engage in community-based activities involving everyone including traditional leaders and those from all walks of life.  I will set an example for the nation to follow by hosting events that bring a cross-section of our people including leadership of all political parties, religious and traditional groups.  Independence eve events at the community level will be encouraged and supported.  Formal and Informal educational institutions and the media will be encouraged to put on programmes that teach and inform both young and old about our history, traditions and all the leaders who promoted the liberation of our people.  No one will be left out.  Unity, patriotism will be the key.  We can do it under a progressive leadership.” IT is therefore imperative that we reconsider how we celebrate our independence day and make it more enjoying.
