Libya: detainees tortured and denied medical care / MSF Suspends Work in Detention Centres in Misrata

GENEVA, Switzerland, January 26, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Detainees in the Libyan city of Misrata are being tortured and denied urgent medical care, leading the international medical humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to suspend its operations in detention centres in Misrata, MSF announced today.

MSF teams began working in Misrata’s detention centres in August, 2011, to treat war-wounded detainees. Since then, MSF doctors were increasingly confronted with patients who suffered injuries caused by torture during interrogation sessions. The interrogations were held outside the detention centres. In total, MSF treated 115 people who had torture-related wounds and reported all the cases to the relevant authorities in Misrata. Since January, several of the patients returned to interrogation centres have even been tortured again.

“Some officials have sought to exploit and obstruct MSF’s medical work,” said MSF General Director Christopher Stokes. “Patients were brought to us in the middle of interrogation for medical care, in order to make them fit for further interrogation. This is unacceptable. Our role is to provide medical care to war casualties and sick detainees, not to repeatedly treat the same patients between torture sessions.”

MSF medical teams were also asked to treat patients inside the interrogation centres, which was categorically refused by the organisation.

The most alarming case occurred on January 3, when MSF doctors treated a group of 14 detainees returning from an interrogation centre located outside the detention facilities. Despite previous MSF demands for the immediate end of torture, nine of the 14 detainees suffered numerous injuries and displayed obvious signs of torture.

The MSF team informed the National Army Security Service—the agency responsible for interrogations—that a number of patients needed to be transferred to hospitals for urgent and specialised care. All but one of the detainees were again deprived of essential medical care and were subjected to renewed interrogations and torture outside the detention centres.

After meeting with various authorities, MSF sent an official letter on January 9 to the Misrata Military Council, the Misrata Security Committee, the National Army Security Service, and the Misrata Local Civil Council, again demanding an immediate stop to any form of ill treatment of detainees.

“No concrete action has been taken,” said Stokes. “Instead, our team received four new torture cases. We have therefore come to the decision to suspend our medical activities in the detention centres.”

MSF has been present in Misrata since April 2011, in the midst of the Libyan conflict. Since August 2011, MSF has worked in Misrata’s detention centres, treating war wounded, performing surgeries, and providing orthopaedic follow-up care to people who had suffered bone fractures. MSF medical teams have carried out 2,600 consultations, including 311 for violent trauma.

MSF will continue its mental health support activities in schools and health facilities in Misrata, as well as its assistance to 3,000 African migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons in and around Tripoli.

MSF is an international humanitarian medical organisation that has worked in Libya since February 25, 2011. To ensure the independence of its medical work, MSF relies solely on private donations to finance its activities in Libya and does not accept any funding from governments, donor agencies, or military or political groups.

Patience Barbara Kirabo, the woman whose photographs were on Wednesday published in the state-owned Newspaper – The New Vision, and its sister publication vernacular daily – Bukedde purporting to be the mother of Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s new son, Prince Richard Ssemakookiro, this morning presented herself to the media, and denied having any relationship with the Buganda King.

Ms Kirabo, a mother of one, said the publication of her pictures, had greatly injured her reputation and her relationship with her spouse, and she is now seeking an apology and Shs 500 million in compensation.

“[The publication of the picture] has infringed on my freedom. My spouse was se t to introduce me in March and has now pulled out,” she said at a press conference, called by her attorney her Francis Harimwomugasho.

Buganda Kingdom on Wednesday disputed the authenticity of the photographs and cautioned the media to wait for the Kabaka to present the new Prince’s mother at an appropriate time.

Kingdom Attorney General, Apollo Makubuya however said the Kabaka would not take legal action against the state-owned newspapers but warned them to desist from using Buganda Kingdom affairs to meet their ‘selfish’ economic gains.

Buganda Prime Minister John Baptist Walusimbi on January 17 announced that the Kabaka had fathered a child in July 2011, with an unnamed woman from the Nsenene clan. No further details were given leaving the media speculating that the mother was Rose Nansikombi from Bulemeezi in Luweero District.

Jeremie Of YFM Says She Is Still A Virgin & That She Got Her ‘FAKE’ Accent From Attending Morning Star School!

0

If you know Jeremie, then you will surely have issues with the way she throws out that fake accent. On radio, it even gets worse.

There is a rumour that when America rapper Fabolous came to Ghana and she was interviewing him on YFM, it got dramatic and embarrassing when Fabolous could not hear anything she was saying as a result of her fake accent. By the end of the interview, Fabolous had said…Pardon me…Pardon me…like 50 times… I used the word rumour because I did not listen to that interview but knowing how Jeremie fakes it, I think I believe it.

Over the weekend on Delay’s show, Jeremie, 27, revealed that she is still a virgin as she has never had any sexual intercourse before… That is no big news since by default that is what a Ghanaian woman is supposed to do until she is married.

My issue is how she tried to justify her FAKE accent, saying it was real and flows naturally. As to where she adopted or gained that accent from, she said… “No I don’t pretend, I don’t fake it and I don’t rehearse it. When I seat behind the console, I flow naturally.”

She continued “I attended Morning Star and that was where I started school. So from the basic level, I was already speaking good English. Then I continued to Aburi Girls and then I travelled outside the country.

I went to France but I attended an international school there, Lycee George Clemenceau, so though the school was in France, our course content was in English so I was speaking English and that was where I picked it up,”

Is that accent from France? When did Morning Star School begin to impact such accent? I had several friends from Morning Star during my Adisadel College days and they all spoke like those of us who attended ‘Syto’…LOL

Come on Jeremie, what is the sense in struggling to put up any accent which your listeners detest and the people you interview can’t even understand…

You know what they call her? LAFFA chick! And was that picture not taken at the Accra Mall bathroom? Geez!

Ashawobrity Actress Says She Took Naked Photos For BF & It Ended In The Public Domain

0

It looks like, same act, same excuse but actioned by different Ghanaian showbiz personalities…Where are the folks who claimed Angela Tabiri’s leaked naked photos were photoshopped?

Guess what, you are wrong! They are real. She claims she took the photos for her BF but for some reason, it ended up everywhere…

Check out the latest report from NewsOne on Angela Tabiri’s leaked photos below…

It is said that a photograph is worth a thousand words and perhaps a thousand interpretations. This explains why naked photographs of Ghanaian actress Angela Tabiri are generating huge controversies and speculations after they reached the media.

The photos, first put out by peacefmonline, has reached a couple of other media houses and NEWS-ONE has laid hands on a few alarming copies so provocative that they could make a gay change into a heterosexual.

Meanwhile, reports reaching NEWS-ONE say Angela, on Monday, fainted out of shock and had to be rushed to a clinic when she saw the naked photos in the media.

When NEWS-ONE reached her after she had been resuscitated, Angela declined speaking to the newspaper apparently out of embarrassment.

Reluctantly explaining the nude photos, the actress apologized to her fans and revealed that she was devastated at the development.

She said the photos were taken by her boyfriend but unfortunately it ended up in the public domain.

“It was my boyfriend who took those pictures. And we were actually playing with them as lovers. He even said jokingly that we should delete them before a mistake happens and they reach the media and lo and behold, here we are in this embarrassment.

“I actually thought he deleted them until recently when he told me that the memory card was missing. My prayer all along was that it doesn’t get into other hands. But obviously that didn’t happen. I am sorry and I have learnt my lessons from it,” she said almost in tears.

Angela is one of the key actresses working with Socrates Safo’s Movie Africa Productions. He has denied allegations that the said photos were taken from his set during the production of the ‘Adult Only’ movie.

“I don’t remember asking her to pose like that on my set or photo shoot. I was surprised when I saw the pictures myself. I am joining her to apologize. But please leave me out of this. I have no idea what really happened. I saw it on the internet just like you. I know you guys, and you know I have issues with you,” Socrates warned.

Angela is not a novice in Ghana’s showbiz industry even though she looks like one. She has been around for a long time.

She has featured in a number of Socrates Safo’s productions. She featured in ‘Hot Fork’, ‘Adults Only’, ‘Sons of Satan’, and Kobi Rana’s upcoming ‘Hotel Babylon’. She has also shot adverts for Vodafone, Captains Dry Gin, Premier Soap, Playboy Liqueur, Sun Silk Hair Pomade, Pusher Bitters, Merchant Bank and Pretty Lady with Stacy Amoateng.

She has also featured in some popular music videos by renowned artistes such as Kwaisey Pee, Reggie Rockstone ft Beenie Man, Amakye Dede, Rex Omar as well as Okyeame Kofi.

NEWS-ONE has learnt that Angela is in a love relationship with a Ghanaian actor.

For Those Asking Who Ashawobrity Angela Tabiri Is…This Is How She Became ‘Famous’

0

People have been asking me who the heck  is this Angela Tabiri flaunting her boobs all around...Before I proceed, you guys got to note that her name is TABIRI not FEBIRI.  Gosh, leave my goddam family name out of this…LOL

Anyway, I have been digging through our archives and have found some snap shots of her from the movie ‘Adult Only‘…I see  no reason why she is worried or somehow ashamed that her naked photos have leaked….Because, they were far ‘leaked’ months ago in the movie-Adulty Only…Is it not through going naked that she became a little famous in Ghana?

In Adult Only, she bared it all, so what is her damn cry about? And when will women also take responsibility when their naked photos leak? Why should it always be my BF did it ? Who took it?

I understand all men including me love these photos but then make sure the guy has a game before you press the SEND…LOL

Who do you think should be blamed when such photos leak? The woman or the man?

Check out the still images from the movie-Adult Only

How To Keep-Up and Be Motivated With Your Fitness Work Outs To Lose The Stomach & Body Fat

0

It’s only the third week of January 2012 and to me NYE seems like it was many months ago. I guess this is an excuse for me to feel like I can pack my trainers and water bottle to one side like I’m sure many  of  you all are guilty of!

You may be surprised to hear that fitness stats claim we’ll abandon our new year’s ‘ keep fit resolutions within two weeks of the new year….shocking right!

The reason sited are based on too much pressure to fulfil the resolution, not being specific about what we want to achieve and not acknowledging what we are already doing well within a particular goal.

I am very determined to keep to my fitness regime for longer than the predicted two weeks  for two reasons, I want to wear  whatever I like without folding my arms to hide the ‘extra bits’ and also because I bought alot of bikini’s in the winter sale in prep for my summer holiday and I plan to wear them all without steering at the chic with a flat tummy!

I’m trying something new this year to keep fit and wanted to review and share with you all. I’ve ditched the expensive gym membership (£42.00 a month membership that I use once a week) and opted in to home work outs.

Out of all the celeb dvd’s taking over the shelves at this time of the year, I chose the Kelly Rowland one because it’s motivating and realistic! There are A LOT of celeb dvd’s out there with celebs who with their stacks of cash, personal trainers and free time have lost weight!

I’ve been doing the dvd for about two weeks now ( I aim to do the dvd three times a week) and the fact that I’m still using it now is saying something. I love this fitness dvd because Kelly Rowland has an amazing body, especially her tummy which is what the dvd focuses on.

What I am going for is the tonne look, not the intense muscle look and Kelly has a nice tonne to her tummy! It’s a mixture of low temp work out but you still feel like you have worked up and sweat, and your muscles feel real tight afterwards.

On the down side the dvd is a bit preconscious and they look beautifully perfect and we know no one looks like that when working out but its no different from all the others out there.

For me I found the dvd really easy to follow and to be honest, I just enjoy am enjoying work out with the dvd.  I don’t see it as I chore and hard work to keep on with exercising. I’m giving the dvd a 4 out of 5!

So if  want to lose those body fat and get toned, especially to get the belly flat and be all confident to rock whatever you desire including bikinis, then grab a copy of the dvd today by clicking HERE…

Brad Pitt: ‘I’d like to marry Angelina’

Angelina and Brad – soon to be hitched?

It could be time to invest in a new hat – Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt look likely to be making their way up the aisle soon.

The ridiculously good-looking couple seem set to become a ridiculously good-looking married couple, after Brad Pitt admitted that his opinions on marriage were shifting.

He was last married to Jennifer Aniston, and it seems that the disintegration of their marriage put him off a bit – his last big comment about marrying Angelina was that they wouldn’t wed until all people legally could, regardless of their sexuality.

Apparently their massive brood of kids are the ones changing their minds, and Brad told The Hollywood Reporter:

“We’d actually like to [marry], and it seems to mean more and more to our kids.

“We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out…

“I’m not going to go any further… [But] It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.”

With Vanessa Paradis denying a rumoured split with Johnny Depp and these two about to get hitched, it looks like love in Hollywood isn’t actually dead after all.

Spider silk cape goes on display

A cape created from golden silk spun by more than a million spiders is going on display this week.

The hand-woven garment is being shown at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum alongside the Golden Spider Silk, a four-metre long piece of brocaded fabric. It took more than four years to make the items from the silk of 1.2 million female golden orb spiders, native to Madagascar.

They have been made by Englishman Simon Peers, who lives in Madagascar, and American Nicholas Godley, and are the only large textiles in the world to have been made from spider silk.

Mr Peers said: “We were keen to show the spider silk textiles at the V&A, being the most appropriate place to premiere this work in Europe.

The cape is on show at the Victoria & Albert Museum from January 25th to 5th June Photo: Paul Grover

“The unique and historic costume and textile collections have been a constant source of inspiration over the years. As far as we know the V&A has never before shown anything made from spider silk, despite its diverse collections of art and decorative arts.

“So we are pleased and very proud to be adding a first to a museum with such a rich, long and illustrious history, and would like to think that we in turn can be an inspiration to others.”

Spiders are collected every morning before silk is extracted from them by trained handlers. They are not harmed in the process and are returned to the wild at the end of each day.

The last known spider silk textile was made for an exhibition in Paris in 1900 but no examples remain.

Pinda: Stop elevating technical colleges to varsities

0

Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda

Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda has discouraged the current trend of transforming technical colleges into universities, saying the colleges need to offer the same services they were intended to at their formation.

Speaking over the weekend at the third graduation ceremony of Arusha Technical College (ATC), Pinda said that the country was now in more need of technicians than before. During the graduation a total of

231 students graduated from different technical fields.

“This is the biggest challenge, as now we’re facing a shortage of technicians in engineering and technology and we’ve started taking steps to improve the quality of education offered by vocational training colleges,” he said, adding that the colleges need to be closely supervised by the National Council of Technical Education (NACTE).

He stated that by June, last year, NACTE had registered 240 institutions offering technical education across the country.

“This number is still small compared to the country’s demand,” he said.

He however commended ATC for coming up with unique training programmes which meet the market demand. Recently, the college introduced civil and irrigation engineering subjects among three new courses.

Earlier, college principal Dr. Richard Masika said that ATC was set to increase enrolment of students from 1,170 to 1,655 by 2014/15 in an effort to curb the shortage of technicians in different engineering fields.

He stated that the college was in the process of increasing the number of programmes which meet the country’s requirement and market demand.

“We’re very determined to meet the challenges facing the country right now. Our role as a technical institute is to drill more experts in this area,” he said.

Established in 1978, the college was elevated to an autonomous college by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) in 2007.

Acting College board chairman Susan Mnafe said that in order for ATC to meet its mission, more had to be done, including improving teaching and learning infrastructure and increasing the number of female hostels.

U.S. rivals accuse China of dumping solar panels

Chinese solar panel makers flooded the U.S. market with their products at the end of last year in anticipation of potential duties on those products, a coalition of American solar manufacturers said on Wednesday, a charge refuted by some top Chinese companies.

The Coalition for American Solar Manufacturing, led by the U.S. arm of German panel maker SolarWorld AG, said Chinese manufacturers including Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd and Trina Solar Ltd have more than doubled shipments of solar cells and modules.

Citing data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Port Import Export Reporting Service, the coalition said Suntech imports rose 76 percent in November compared with the previous month. It said Trina’s imports rose 209 percent in the first half of December compared with the first half of November.

“This significant increase in imports demonstrates that the Chinese know they have violated U.S. and international trade rules and are trying to evade the consequences,” Gordon Brinser, president of SolarWorld Industries America, said in a statement.

Suntech and Trina Solar cited a change in a key U.S. government program for solar installations at the end of 2011 for the year-end surge. The program had paid solar developers a cash grant of 30 percent of the cost of new products.

This year it has become a tax-benefit program that allows solar power plant developers to deduct 30 percent of a project’s cost from their taxes over several years.

“Strong U.S. market demand in the fourth quarter was driven largely by the anticipated expiry of the cash grant program,” a Suntech spokesman said. “Suntech continues to grow steadily with the U.S. solar industry, and in 2011 we maintained our leading market share.”

A Trina Solar spokesman said the company is opposed to any suggestion that its U.S. imports surged as the result of efforts to evade potential tariffs.

“Further, due to production cycle and delivery logistics, it’s an established industry pattern to see the majority of any quarter’s shipments occurring in the last month,” the spokesman said.

Obama’s pledge

CASM also said Miami-based importer Sun Electronics brought in 31,000 Chinese solar laminates on a single day in December, accusing the privately held company of stockpiling imports. The shipment consisted of “at least 77 shipping containers,” the statement said.

Sun Electronics could not be reached for comment.

SolarWorld Industries and six other U.S. solar companies, who have chosen to remain anonymous, have accused Chinese competitors of receiving illegal government subsidies and selling their products in the United States at unfairly low prices.

The companies in October filed a case asking the U.S. Commerce Department to set duties of more than 100 percent on Chinese-made solar cells and panels. Another coalition of U.S. solar companies opposes duties, saying they would threaten 100,000 jobs in the industry by driving up prices and depressing demand.

The U.S. International Trade Commission voted last month to allow the case to proceed and for the Commerce Department to announce preliminary duties this year.

A preliminary decision is expected Feb. 13.

CASM’s statement comes a day after President Barack Obama said in his annual State of the Union speech that he was creating an enforcement unit to crack down on unfair trade practices in China and other countries.

He did not mention the solar panel case specifically, but urged Congress to pass tax credits to create more U.S. clean energy jobs. (Additional reporting by Sakthi Prasad; Editing by Gerald E. McCormick and Muralikumar Anantharaman)
