MATTHEW 5:31-32; 19:1-10

It was said, WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE

But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery (Matthew 5:31-32).

INTRODUCTION

Ida M. Pardue writes: I was issuing a marriage license one day when the bride-to-be exploded. ?You rat! You told me this was your first marriage!? ?It is.?

?Oh yeah? Where it says, ‘number of marriages,’ you wrote ‘two’!?

?Oh . . .I thought that meant how many were getting married.?

Roberta Croteau wrote in Aspire: In the mid-1980’s singer Amy Grant’s life was not as charmed as it appeared. Troubles in her marriage?her husband Gary’s cocaine habit and their subsequent talk of divorce?left Amy in one of her darkest moments. She remembers:

?For a few days, I just stayed in bed and mourned my life. The only hope I could see was just junking it all, moving to Europe, and starting everything all over again. It was then my sister, in a last-ditch visit, marched up right beside my bed and said, ‘Fine, go to Europe, leave it all behind, start your life again. But before you go, tell (my little girl) how can you sing that Jesus can help her through anything in her life, but that He couldn’t help you.’?

The words hit home. Amy and Gary began marriage and personal counseling, slowly rebuilding their relationships with each other and with God.

I. A REFERENCE TO PERMISSION FOR DIVORCE V. 31
Don’t forget that Jesus said, ?Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven?(v. 20). Jesus is calling for a higher commitment to God than the scribes and Pharisees. In verse 27 Jesus has made a reference to the prohibition of adultery in the Mosaic Law. Now He deals with the problem of divorce. The text that Jesus quotes is Deuteronomy 24:1-4. Many of the Jewish men in Jesus’ day were using Deuteronomy as a pretext for divorce. But Jesus was calling basically for a higher commitment to marriage. The ease with which a Jewish man could divorce his wife and the deplorable situation a divorced woman faced in that male-dominated world demanded a call to God’s original purpose in marriage. The rabbis had taken Moses’ requirement for a written certificate of divorce as divine approval of it (the school of Hillel). Rabbi Hillel on one hand permitted a man to put away his wife for ?any good cause.? For example, according to the teachings of this Rabbi, a man could divorce his wife if she burned his food. Rabbi Shammai on the other hand, limited divorce to adultery. These two rabbis were the contemporaries of Jesus. The Jews had misconstrued Moses’ intention. Moses’ intention was to slow down divorce proceedings and force a ?cooling off? period for the husband. It was not divine approval, according to Jesus. God’s intention was that marriage was for life (Matt. 19:4-10). It seems to me that Christians have not taken the biblical teaching on marriage seriously. Divorce is as hurtful and destructive today as in Jesus’ day. God intends marriage to be a lifetime commitment (Genesis 2:24). When entering a marital union, Christians should never consider divorce an option for solving problems or a way out of a relationship that seems dead. Jesus is also attacking those who purposefully abuse the marital covenant, using divorce to satisfy their lustful desire to marry someone else. Let me ask you a question. Are your actions today helping to sustain your marriage and making it stronger, or are you tearing your marriage apart?

II. THE SANCTITY OF THE MARITAL BOND V. 32
Marriage is the first human institution that God established in the Garden of Eden. Therefore, the ending of the highest human relationship is no trivial matter. But many of the rabbis have made it trivial with their rationalized version of Moses’ teaching. These two verses show that Jesus takes marriage seriously as God the Father. In Jesus’ answer to the Pharisees in Matthew 19, He said that under no circumstance is divorce commanded in the Bible. The Bible does not command divorce. However, Jesus says that divorce is permissible only in terms of marital unfaithfulness. There is a whole lot of difference between a command and permission. Jesus therefore does not command divorce but only permits it if all attempts at reconciliation have failed because He recognizes that the adultery has already undermined one of the most fundamental elements of a marriage?sexual exclusivity. The Book of Hebrews says, ?Marriage bed should be undefiled? (Heb. 13:4). This does not mean that divorce should occur automatically when a spouse commits adultery. The word translated, unchastity implies sexually immoral-lifestyle, not a confessed and repented act of adultery. If you discover that your partner has been unfaithful to you, you should first make every effort to forgive, reconcile, and restore the relationship. We are always to look for reasons to restore the marriage relationship rather than for excuses to leave it. The pain of divorce has led some compassionate Christians to reinterpret, ?water down? or even de-emphasize biblical teachings to make divorce and remarriage seem easier and more acceptable theologically. But to ignore or de-emphasize biblical teaching is neither compassionate nor helpful.

Modern marriage is a highly unstable institution. Christian marriage is under assault more than ever. After viewing a large number of television dramas and soap operas, a Cornell University sociologist concluded that these programs portray a world of ?disposable fly-apart marriages,? ?throw-away husbands, throw-away wives? and ?disposable children? (Rose K. Goldsen, in Human Behavior 4 December, 1975). Certainly these television dramas are ?only stories,? but they reflect and influence the thinking of millions of people, including Christians, who may not approve but nevertheless accept infidelity, illegitimacy and divorce as a way of life in our society. Commitment is giving way to an attitude of self-centered ?freedom,? and ?till death do us part? is being replaced by a belief that divorce can always provide an escape hatch if difficulties arise following the wedding.

I like what Dr. J. Allan Petersen writes: ?Partnership must precede parenthood. A man is a husband first, father second, businessman third. A woman is a wife first, mother second, career woman third. A strong marriage precedes a strong family. Marriage is permanent: parenthood is temporary. Marriage is central; parenthood is secondary. Marriage is the hub; children are the spokes. The child-centered home is poor training for the child, poor marriage insurance, [and] poor preparation for the empty nest. Your partner is first, before children, job or career. A man must love his wife as himself, and the wife must honor her husband (Ephesians 5:33).?

According to Zig Zigler, ?divorce rates have risen more than 700 percent over the last fifty years, and the number of single-parent families has mushroomed. For example, in 1948 only one out of fourteen children under the age of six was brought up by a single parent. By 1973, that proportion was one out of seven. Today, that statistic is one out of five. Divorce data tabulated for fifty-eight countries, regions, and cultures between 1947 and 1981 showed the so-called seven-year itch was actually a four-year itch and most marriages that will end in divorce will break up by the fourth year. In the United States, marriages are more likely to end by the second year. That’s tragic.?

Divorce can be painful to a spouse and a disaster to the children. This is a question for dad: If you knew your child’s standard of living would drop 73 percent and you wouldn’t see him for the next year; would you still go through with the divorce (if it is your choice), or would you take every conceivable step to save the marriage?

A question for mom: If you knew that your children and you were going to suffer in an incredible manner mentally and financially and that your chances for happiness in the near and distant future were minimal at best, would you still go through with the divorce (if it is your choice), or would you take every conceivable step to save the marriage?

Unhealthy marriages are born out of unhealthy emotional needs. And these needs must be met and changed individually for a couple to have a happy marriage. Those individuals who feel that the answer is to divorce and look for another mate usually end up marrying a mate with the same emotional needs. The real solution to unhealthy emotional situations is not pursuing a new mate, but pursuing both individual and marriage therapy to learn how to get those personal emotional needs met in appropriate ways. According to psychiatrist Frank Minirth of Minirth-Meier Clinics, ?Divorce is second only to the death of a spouse in terms of emotional impact.? Dr. Minirth observes that the ultimate negative emotional results of divorce are even greater than losing a mate through death. He points out that when you lose a mate in death, you have no choice. However, in most cases, divorce is a choice.

WHO LOSES IN DIVORCE?
The real victims of divorce in many cases are the children. I believe that many parents have no idea or don’t stop to think about what impact the divorce has on their children. Even under ideal circumstances the children of divorce generally suffer. Therefore, the best thing a parent can do for a child is to love his or her spouse.

It has been computed that ten million children in America have watched their parents’ divorce, and that number is growing by one million each year. Those of you who are contemplating divorce have you sat down to reflect on what impact the divorce would have on your children? Almost half of the children from a divorce background will enter adulthood as ?worried, underachieving, self-deprecating, and sometimes angry young men and women.? Two out of three of the female children will show such ?sleeper effects? as fears of failure and betrayal in their relationship with men. In other words, they are at great risk for failed marriages. Their use of alcohol and other drugs will be substantially higher than that of children from intact families.

As the children get older, we discover college students from divorced homes are more sexually active than their classmates from intact homes. And males whose parents were divorced before they were two years old are more sexually aggressive than other men. According to Evangelist Bill Glass, who conducts ?Champions? Weekend Evangelistic meetings in almost all the prisons of the United States about 80 percent to 90 percent of all prison inmates come from a divorced or broken homes. And he adds that almost 100 percent of them are mad at their fathers. He said that if you get some of them to speak about their fathers you can sense the hate that is welling inside them. These inmates are timing bombs waiting to explode. It is just a matter of time. I listened to an African American counselor who said that now African American ladies from 25 years and above are going for inter-racial marriages because many of the young African American males are in jail. If they had to wait they would stay single for the rest of their lives. And many of them are the victims of divorced parents.

Just a few weeks ago, a doctor (dentist) ran her car over her husband and killed him because the husband was having an affair and was threatening the wife with divorce. The woman felt that she could not cope with that separation. She was concerned about their children, the sacrifices she has made, the life and investments they have made together. She was not willing to let go all these things. She made a desperate and wrong decision and now what she was afraid would happen to the children has happened to them. The husband is dead. She is in jail; and grandparents have to raise the children. We hope and pray that the grandparents would live longer to cater for the physical, emotional, and the educational needs of the children. You see what infidelity and the threat of divorce has done to this family?

The nuclear family is not the only one that suffers the impact of divorce and broken homes. The impact of divorce and broken homes are felt by the society at large. Many of the thugs, drug pushers, armed robbers, prostitutes, drug addicts, and gangsters are the products of divorce and broken homes. Not only the society at large but also the church is decimated because of the alarming rate at which Christians divorce. It is no wonder there is no power in our churches today. It is no wonder many of our prayers go unanswered, because God says, ?I hate divorce? (Malachi 2:16).

Let me ask you a question: why do you want to enjoy the forgiveness of sin from God through Jesus Christ, but cannot forgive what your spouse has done to you and you are seeking divorce? Divorce is devastating but it is not the unpardonable sin. If you are a victim of divorce or the initiator of divorce have you asked God for forgiveness? Some of you need to confess and ask God for forgiveness for breaking the marriage bond. Marriage is very important to God because He established it. That is why you are not to rush into marriage, because it is a sacred institution. Therefore, to undermine and dissolve marriage with sexual infidelity or divorce is a sin against the teaching of the Bible and God.

THE NUISANCE OF ACCRA METROPOLITAN ASSEMBLY (AMA)

Recently the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has embarked upon demolition of some structures which were wrongly sited within the metropolis. It has brought about the threshold of public up roar. Varied questions have been asked to some seeming entities with the hope of an answer. But alas! None is forth coming.

The first in the series of flattening illegal structures in 2012 took place at Weija, a suburb of Accra. Arguably, Weija remains the source of pipe borne water for the metropolis. Yes, the dam accommodating the millions of gallons of water is exposed to constant pollution by encroachers around the buffer zone. This has resulted in the heighten levels of chemicals used to treat the water from the dam. Many a citizen has complained and compared the quality of pipe water from Weija with that of Akosombo. The low quality of water from the Weija dam has invariably informed the choice of pipe lines that many domestic homes do connect. Forthrightly, this came about due to the illegal structures which have sprung up in the reserved area. The filth generated within the safeguard territory trickles in to the water consistently. Unfortunate.

Again, the rail crossing at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle was the next to receive the crack of the whip of the AMA. It is precarious to reside by the rail lines which can be fatal in the case of any derailment. According to the Mayor of Accra, Mr. Alfred Vanderpuije this was in the zest of the public and country. Well done Sir.

It is always prudent to live a preventive life rather than a remedial one. There are planned and unplanned situations; hence prevention remains the best option of most civilised human communities. The various locations mentioned above were not built in a day. Sir, you will agree with me but, might not necessarily be on my side that, there have been some lapses on the part of the AMA, whether under your administration or the previous, which your attention should be drawn to receive keen supervision. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has a Task Force who are remunerated monthly with the tax payers’ money. Besides, the rat race with traders on pavements within the metropolis, what else is their duty? Could they not take to constant supervision at various no go area to prevent structures from springing up?

Nonetheless, the metro boss and his cohort always abhor with their unpopular remedial outburst at varied locations of the capital. These Task Forces has arrogated themselves to the dishonourable irresponsibility of collecting money from the hard pressed traders on the pavements. It is of uttermost importance to assign to these seem to be working Task Forces, under whose guise mayhem thrives, the onus to patrol these reserved areas to protect them from encroachments. In other words to practice the wait and see character pays none, but tears. What is the preferred, wait till the fire starts or work to prevent it? The apt is the latter.

Currently the Director-General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Prof. Edward Akaho is embroidered with the law for demolishing structures within the buffer zone around the commission’s facility, at Kwabenya in Accra. This was reported in the Daily Graphic of Tuesday, 24th January, 2012, number, 18749. The effects of an accident of the magnitude of an atomic facility could be recalled of the Russian nuclear accident some years ago. Every civilised human community thrives on preventive measures. It would be embarrassing should the country act like the proverbial bird on a fence whistling carelessly of being hunted till the stone blow that will kill it is dealt to it. Ghana needs to move to avert any untimely disaster. This is what has landed the Professor and 36 security men of the Commission in the grips of the Ghana Police. Who offered the lands so close to the facility for property development? One will be amazed to realise that there are

domestic homes which share common wall with a facility such as an atomic reactor. What are we waiting for? Is it, had I known, which is the philosophy of the careless?

In spite of the structures sited wrongly and illegally, questions should be put to the owners of these lands as to how they were acquired. The Lands Commission should equally be held corporal for land title issuance and registration. In the same vein, those who sat aloof till buildings and properties running into millions of Ghana Cedis to be destroyed, without resisting developers, should also be charged. This action taken will zip deep in to the immediate and remote future to serve as a deterrent. Despite the brute force used to reclaim these sensitive lands, the clearing of debris is an added cost in this exercise. Hence, who pays, for the reason that, if left till the rains come, it would either promote the festering of mosquitoes or bring about flooding.

Likewise the situation prevailing at Sodom and Gomorra, where the city authorities looked on without any preventive sense of duty up until the estuary was occupied by squatters. On several instances, attempts have been made to evict the squatters, but have always struck a blank wall. How long are we going to perpetuate this culture of irresponsibility towards serious life threatening conditions? These scenes are fairly spread throughout the country as if people at positions of trust to execute such duties are living dead.

The country will do herself a lot of good should we come to appreciate that the best way for us to live and not just to survive is through pro-activeness. To champion African excellence demands on the country to acquire the character of the wisdom of hind sight, thus future piercing. The human rights activist should be up in arms with the law on human settlement to challenge these authorities for negligence of duty, which culminate in the loss of properties and businesses of, would-be house owners and businessmen and women. The responsiveness of the state institutions should equally be questioned with some level of reprimand. For the reason that, these servants of the state who draw their salaries and emoluments from the consolidated fund, which is a pool of the tax payers’ money, cannot be pardoned to continue with such laxity.

Nevertheless, the citizens are also expected to make detailed enquiries about lands before acquiring it for development. When authorities issue a note of caution citizens are again, supposed to adhere and refrain from over ruling such restrains to help prevent later upheavals. Downrightly, some Ghanaians in their quest to acquire property end up purchasing sites or lands without conducting due diligence which consequently fits your guess. Because, the very destroyers of our society are the very people that society has educated and cared for.

Human Rights Advocates should demand from the authorities before or after demolitions those within the Town and Country Planning Department who gave the go ahead for construction to commence and the punitive measures which will be meted out to workers below excellence. This should be the battle instead of the call for human face to be tailored to force evictions. The flag is not meant to inspire Activist to violently interfere with anything in the by-laws of the Town and Country Planning that must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties and occupancy of our lands.

A Great philosopher has said that only between two and six per cent of the individuals in any given society work to INDUCE CHANGE and to transform the lives of the people. These are the people who see beyond the now and routine way of doing things. Their focus is societal transformation. Let as many as in our present society of Ghana associate themselves to the statement above.

In the case where citizens are unperturbed the city authorities should pick a cue from Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Estrada’s belief that, if pupils don’t learn the way we teach, perhaps we should teach the way they learn.

Rolling the mat on this thorny issue let Huge White educate all concerned and has bone of contention with the admonition that, ?Mistakes are lessons of wisdom. The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power.

Basket Mouth ft eLDee & Wizkid – Where You Dey

Surprise Surprise! Arguably Nigeria’s biggest comedian, Basketmouth, hits the booth alongside eLDee and Wizkid to give us what would be his official single “Where You Dey”. You’ll be surprised by his lyrical skills. Thumbs up from me. Your thoughts?

“If you call him-Mr. Multi-talented you might be right-He raps-very well at that, he is a Comedian and finally a Compere extraordinaire. Some have even come to refer to him has the Crown Prince of Comedy; whether that’s a right assertion is a topic for another day. But we can tell you for a fact that he is good at his job. 

The new deal with him right now, is that he is remembering what majorly brought him to the entertainment scene in the first place-Music. He had fallen madly in love in the 90’s with Rap Music better known now has Hip-Hop. His many influences or inspirations then were the likes of Wu Tang Clan- made up of the likes of Method Man, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Raekwon, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastards, Inspectah Decks & U-God, Buckshot and many others.

He took his love a step further by collaborating with his elder brother-Godwin and a few other friends to form a Rap Group they named-The Psychopaths made up of 8 members, they experimented in the studios bringing all the 8 elements together, but never released an Album or any of the singles.

While Godwin & Bright who later became popular by his moniker-Basketmouth got admitted into University of Benin, the other members of the Psychopaths went their different ways, thereby putting a temporary stop to their group. Bright & Godwin continued at Uniben and formed an affiliate group which later collaborated with the likes of Faze of Plantashun Boyz, Dare Art Alade & others, but like before they didn’t release any single or body of work.

Recently Godwin who had gone on to live in the UK with family came to Nigeria and out of fun, both brothers decided to enter the studio and see what they could make of their latent talent, they had a collaboration with Eldee D Don & the Prince of the moment-the one & only Wizkid and what they came up with is titled- Where You Dey?

But the main deal-the full body of work, a complete album at that is now in the works. Tentative release date is sometime in April of 2012, and both brothers are collaborating with Africa’s pride Tuface, the one & only Egberi Papa 1-Timaya, Dare Art Alade, Davido, Terry D Rapman, Flavor, Nigeria’s number one lyricist-Mode 9, OD & many others.

Not to worry at all, Basketmouth is not retiring from comedy, he is only giving a voice to a talent he had always toyed with, to see how the people would accept or view his 1st love-RAP MUSIC!”

Tagged Susan Peters and LAD,it was held on December 23,2011 at Civic Centre,Victoria Island,Lagos. Like every other entertainment celebrity who has embarked on this course,encomiums poured on Ms. Peters,as she made people to feel that she was following the footsteps of her colleagues such as,Tonto Dikeh,Omotola Jalade Ekeinde,Mercy Johnson and many others who have in their little ways given back to the society that kept them in various positions. Of course,actress Susan Peters has unarguably contributed her quota as one of the good actresses in Nollywood.She has in countless films exhibited her acting prowess to convince teaming fans that she came to Nollywood to make a mark. Right now,people are saying that Susan Peters and LAD concert for the charity which garnered clamor from all angles was not her own original package as she made people to believe. According to the source,Ms. Peters made her friends,colleagues and fans to believe that she staged the show to generate fund to support the less privileged children in our society;but the truth is that the concert was not a brainchild of Ms. Peters. However,Ms. Peters never mentioned anywhere that she was supporting this daughter of a Governor by inviting celebrity showbiz personalities to the show,rather she built an image of herself around the concert and garnered cheap publicity. As gathered the Duchess as she is fondly called by her close pals came into the picture few months back when she went for a make-over in a popular salon in Lagos. Ms. Peters was said to have overheard the discussion of this 19 years girl and her friends who came to the same salon to make their hair. According to the source,Ms. Peters gladly introduced herself to this girl and informed her that she as a celebrity entertainer can bring star singers to perform at the event,turn it to a bigger event and enable people pay gate fees to enter,while actors and actresses will naturally step-out to support her. Indeed,it was a welcomed development for the girl as she allowed Ms. Peters to work with her as a celebrity partner. Amosun’s daughter,even though she duped the audience with the claim that she was the real owner of the show as she designed a banner tagged,Susan Peters and LAD. This she used as a background for her red carpet,where she allowed only her celebrity colleagues to use.At the point when she posed for paparazzi with Governor Amosun’s three daughters,she never mentioned to anybody that the children are the owners of the show and that she was only supporting them.Meanwhile,the Governor’s Daughter gave the show a political undertone with all the respect and support she got from various first ladies such as,Senator Remi Tinubu,Abimbola Fashola and many others who honoured her mother. According to the source,her colleagues and friends who stormed Civic Centre on 23rd night were humbled when they realized that Ms. Peters was not in charge of the purported concert,as she had only two tables allocated to her for the whole Nollywood personalities and that was where her power ended. In fact,it was a shocker for her colleagues to discover other people on the scene,and eventually they turned out to be the real people in charge of the concert.This is because,Ms. Peters had on various occasions told people: My show is coming up on Friday evening and I have been talking about it to various people,so that all the money that I will use to support less privilege children will be raised It became clearer to them that their well-respected colleague lied about the real ownership of the concert when Gov. Amosun’s family took charge and gave preferential treatment to political personalities more than showbiz stars. Ms. Peters inability to take care of her colleagues the way she should have,if the concert really belonged to her uncovered the truth and her colleagues felt so bad that they regretted leaving their homes for Susan Peters. The situation almost became disgraceful for Ms. Peters when Gov. Amosun’s family introduced 15 and 19years old children to anchor the event.Although the proceeds from the concert ran into millions of naira,actresses were not happy as the two kids who anchored the event murdered their names. According to the source,Ms. Peters struggled all the way to make a statement to placate her colleagues,but her effort flopped totally,because the real owners of the concert refused to pay much attention to the showbiz stars. This situation we gathered created heat of anger among the actresses as they regretted even taking their bath that evening and step out to Victoria Island.
