Cabbie Arrested For Rape

BUSTED! Teye Kwame

A 33-YEAR-OLD taxi driver is in the grips of the Sakumono District Police for allegedly raping and robbing a passenger at knife point.

The suspect, Teye Kwame, a resident of Kotobabi No2 on the Spintex Road in Accra, was said to have taken his victim to an unsecured area and raped her in the taxi.

ASP Michael Addae, Sakumono District Crime Officer, told DAILY GUIDE that on January 19, 2012, the victim (name withheld) boarded the suspect’s taxi with registration number GS 3593-11 at about 2:30 am from Kotobabi No2 to Flower Pot on the Spintex Road.

Upon reaching an unsecured area, the driver was said to have parked, pulled out a jack knife and pointed it at the throat of his victim and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

After the act, according to the Crime Officer, Teye furiously pulled the victim from the vehicle naked and dragged her to a distant away from the scene, after which he sped off, leaving the victim to her fate.

He said the cabbie sped off with his victim’s handbag, a pair of slippers and an unspecified amount of money which were all in his car.

ASP Addae noted that while investigations were being conducted into the matter, another victim was said to have lodged a complaint at the Sakumono Police Station against the suspect for using the same method to rob and rape her.

On January 19, 2012, the victim, who was walking around Legon in Accra, was said to have spotted the suspect and identified him as the rapist.

He was immediately arrested by the East-Legon Police in Accra and transferred to the Sakumono District Police Command where he was rearrested.

ASP Addae noted that the suspect would be arraigned when investigations into the matter were concluded.

He admonished the public, especially women, to be mindful of such miscreants and avoid staying out late or walking alone at night.

German Human Rights Commissioner appalled by the jailing of Ethiopian journalists

BERLIN, Germany, January 27, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Today (26 January), a group of Ethiopian journalists and opposition politicians were sentenced to prison terms of between 14 years and life. In this connection Federal Government Human Rights Commissioner Markus Löning issued the following statement:

“I am appalled by the convictions. Freedom of the press is one of the foundations of every democracy. The Ethiopian Government has taken notable steps to take their country forward.

To be sustainable however, any development needs to go hand in hand with respect for human rights. It is vital for the freedom of the press and freedom of opinion to be safeguarded in Ethiopia.”

Journalists Reyot Alemu, Woubshet Taye and Elias Kifle (in absentia), ENDP leader Zerihun Gebre-Egziabher (Ethiopian National Democratic Party) and opposition supporter Hirut Kifle have been found guilty under the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation and Criminal Code of offences including the “planning, preparation conspiracy, incitement and attempt of terrorist act”.

“Like the whole international community I am personally gravely concerned about the future of the freedom of the press and of opinion in Ethiopia in the light of the numerous arrests and trials of journalists and opposition politicians under the Anti-Terrorism Code.”

PHILIPPINES: Protect journalist facing threats to his life

Dear Ms. Loretta Ann Rosales,

PHILIPPINES: Protect journalist facing threats to his life

Name of journalist facing threats: Ronald Allan Mascardo, editor and publisher of a local newspaper Dadiangas Balita in General Santos City.
Details about his threats: He received threats via his mobile after he made a speech against those involved in the murder of another journalist, Chris Guarin. Guarin was murdered in front of his wife and daughter on January 5, 2012.

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the threats to the life of Ronald Allan Mascardo, whose details are mentioned above. I am aware that the threats on Mascardo came after he openly criticized those involved in the murder of Chris Guarin.

Guarin, publisher and editor-in-chief of a daily community newspaper Tatak News, was earlier shot dead at 10pm on January 5, 2012 in the same city. During Guarin’s burial ceremony on January 15, Mascardo criticized those who allegedly ‘masterminded’ his murder. In his speech he was reported to have said:

“It deeply hurts. What do they think about us journalists? Don’t we have family, wives, children? Only because of the personal business interest of the others, of their interest to earn a living, they kill people to feed their family?” A day after, he received threatening messages from sender +63946 4823367 on his phone: “GIHAGIT MO ANG NAGPATAY KAY CHRIS GUARIN IKAW ANG SUNOD” (You are daring the killers of Chris Guarin. You will be next).

We are deeply concerned that Mascardo is now being targeted because of his criticism against those involved in the murder of Guarin. However, we see this not solely as an attack on Mascardo’s exercise of free speech as an individual and as a journalist, but also openly challenged the police establishment and the local government of General Santos.

We therefore urged you to ensure that investigation on who had made threats on him is adequately investigated upon. As you are aware, it is the primary responsibility of the police to ensure the security and safety of Mascardo, his family and those working for him, knowing full well of the threats on him. While we appreciate the police provision of security escorts on him, however, we have reservations as to how police escort operates.

Thus, we urge that adequate resources must be allocated to ensure the safety of Mascardo and that of his family. Also, we urge you to ensure that effective and adequate investigation in determining those who are responsible in the murder of Guarin is also conducted. We are of the opinion that those who made threat on Mascardo could also have responsibility into the pre-meditated murder of Guarin.

We trust that you take action in this matter promptly.

Yours sincerely,

William Nicholas Gomes

Sekou Grabs Mills Neck

0

President John Evans Atta Mills and Sekou Nkrumah

Sekou Nkrumah, the last child of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has blasted President John Evans Atta Mills, rubbishing his ‘father for all’ mantra.

Instead, Sekou said the President was a notorious hypocrite who should not be taken serious for the things he says.

Sekou, who fell out of favour with the government after being sacked as the boss of the National Youth Council (NYC) for questioning the competence of President Mills, was speaking in an interview over government’s decision to send two of his siblings, Professor Francis Nkrumah and Samia Nkrumah, Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), to Ethiopia to witness the unveiling of a statue in honour of their father.

A statement from the Presidency signed by Communications Director Koku Anyidoho, yesterday, said, “President Mills has invited Dr Francis and Samia Nkrumah, Chairman of the CPP, to join in the unveiling of a statue in honour of their father, for the leading role he played in the African liberation struggle as well as the Pan Africanist Movement.”

The President is expected to leave Accra for Addis Ababa on Friday to attend the 18th ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of States and Governments of the African Union (AU) and would be accompanied by the two.

Sekou sees everything wrong with the move since he was neither invited nor informed by government or his own siblings, noting, “The man who says he is the father of all now shows how hypocritical he is.”

Apart from the fact that he was not informed of it, Sekou said he was also not invited for the trip.

Sekou said he was not the least worried about the development because of how he was virtually sidelined during the centenary celebration of the life of his late father when he was not included in the programme like his other siblings.

He asked, “Is it because I have declared support for Akufo-Addo so I’m no longer Nkrumah’s son?”

Sekou believed he was deliberately not informed by government because of his criticism of the President and his administration.

“Let them do what they like. That’s their problem; honestly I care less,” he noted.

“I am more disappointed in my siblings not with the government because I have seen how governments behave; once you are opposed to them, they want to sideline you but that is not my concern but when it’s from your own siblings who will do a thing like that then honestly I mean it’s quite sad.

“It’s really interesting that my own siblings too because of the little things they will get travelling with the President; they will also not discuss the matter with me. I find it very strange,” he stated, wondering whether Samia and Francis think they are more of Nkrumah’s children than he Sekou.

In spite of all this, the tough-talking politician stated, “I’m not worried at all but it just tells me that if you are going to represent the truth and fight for the best interest of Ghanaians and therefore looking for the best leadership that can really turn this country’s around, then it appears you are the bad one because I am not a bootlicker going to bootlick those in power for favours, for travels or whatever it is then I appear to be the bad son of Nkrumah.

“So let it be, if those of us who continue to fight for what is right who happens to be the bad once, I don’t mind; my conscience is clear. I will continue to fight for Ghana and I’m not fighting for my personal interest for the majority of Ghanaians to have a better life.”

Reshuffle Is A Big Joke

“Sekou also made a mockery of the President’s latest cabinet reshuffle, describing it as a joke since, according to him, “he (the President) is just moving people from one Ministry to the other and back to the same Ministry.”

“I think it’s just recycling the old people they have and then moving people around. When he started in 2009, Prof should have started with his first team. If now he is still reshuffling and making changes, I don’t think what he couldn’t do in three years he can do in one year.

“If someone is competent you leave him where he is, if someone is incompetent, you don’t go and put him in another Ministry; I mean the whole thing is a joke and it looks like just giving job for the boys,” he emphasised.

He cited the appointment of Said Sinare as Ghana’s Ambassador to Egypt as a clear example, wondering, “What value is he going to add? He’s the same person who when I had problems with Mills, he was trying to tell me to be patient.”

Dr Sekou Nkrumah believed that the patience Sinare was talking about was to get something for himself because in his opinion, “people are just supporting personalities and governments just to get something for themselves.”

He equally did not see the wisdom in appointing the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South constituency, Fritz Baffour, as Information Minister.

“If he was that good, do you wait for the fourth year before you appoint him as Minister and by the time he goes through vetting and settles down, when is he going to start work?” Sekou asked.

He said, “It is high time Ghanaians voted and changed Mills and his incompetent government.”

NPP supporters’ houses set ablaze in Bawku

0

Several houses belonging to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East region of Ghana were on Friday dawn set ablaze.

The burnt houses included that of the former Bawku NPP constituency chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala. The incident took place at one of the hotspots in the Bawku township called Zongo.

Amadu Hamza, the Bawku NPP Secretary, suspected the NDC youth in Bawku were behind the arson.

“We think that the attack was politically motivated by members of the ruling government since Mahama Ayariga [NDC parliamentary candidate for the area] came out earlier to allege that NPP members were burning NDC members’ homes two weeks ago,” he said.

“We believe the situation is not calm because there are indications that this is just the beginning and we are expecting government to strengthen the local security arrangement on the ground,” Hamza added.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister for Education and the NDC Parliamentary candidate for Bawku, Mahama Ayariga, who had earlier raised alarm on a similar attack on NDC members condemned the act.

He denied the allegation that his party supporters were behind the arson.

“I totally condemn this things and I want to give the assurance that no member or leader in our party will support such acts,” he said. “People are trying to create the impression that given the numerous complaints that I have made on this issue mean the NDC members are retaliating. ”

“We have been cautioning all our supporters not to attempt to engage in any act of retaliation and leave the matter in the hands of the police,” he added.

The deputy education minister therefore pleaded with supporters of the two major political parties in Bawku to co-exist peacefully.

Ayariga impressed upon the security operatives in Bawku to strengthen their intelligence systems to be able to apprehend the arsonists.

Woyome Thrown Out

0

Alfred Agbesi Woyome

ALFRED AGBESI Woyome, the man at the centre of the GH¢58 million judgment debt scandal, has been thrown out by a Fast Track High Court in Accra in a civil suit he had filed against Triumphant Global Ministries and the head pastor of the church.

In a case akin to the one in which he ‘fraudulently’ obtained a colossal amount from government, Mr. Woyome (plaintiff) had sued the church (1st defendant) and its head pastor (2nd defendant) for refund of various sums of money; ¢620,720,000.00 (GH¢62,000) and US$5,000 he allegedly advanced to them as loans.

However, Mr. Woyome, who was said to be a deacon of the church at the time of the alleged transaction, could not produce any documentary evidence that he had given the defendants any loan, neither were his key witnesses credible enough to bail him out, leaving the court with no option than to throw out the case.

While he said there were no written documents witnessing the alleged loans since it was not the practice of the church to prepare documents covering loans, his witnesses, who were all described as rebels of the church, contended that there were records covering all the monies received from him as loans since they were the ones who contracted the loans for and on behalf of the church.

They could, however, not provide a single record to support their claims.

Giving his ruling, Justice Yaw Appau concluded that the plaintiff could not succeed on his claim, “which this court finds frivolous, unmeritorious, unwarranted and at best, an afterthought as the defendants contended in their statement of defence.”

The case was accordingly dismissed with costs.

In his statement of claim, the NDC bankroller said the total of monies he granted to the defendants as loans came to ¢620,720,000.00 and $5,000.

Accordingly, he prayed the court to grant him judgment since the defendants had ignored all demands made by him for the repayment of the loans.

But the 2nd defendant who represented the 1st defendant in their statement of defence filed on July 27, 2004, categorically denied Mr. Woyome’s claim.

They denied that Mr. Woyome ever granted loans to the defendants to the tune of ¢620,750,000.00 and US$5,000 or to any tune and demanded strict proof of this allegation by the plaintiff.

According to them, when the plaintiff became a member of the church, he, like all other members, contributed financially to the programmes and activities of the church by way of gifts, donations, offertory and tithing.

They described Mr. Woyome as someone who was always ready to top up monies collected by way of appeal for funds for specific projects as a way of expressing his appreciation for God’s bountiful blessing upon his life.

However, at a point in time, Mr. Woyome and his ilk attempted to remove the head pastor of the church and when that failed, he resorted to the court action.

Justice Appau said the main issues up for determination were whether or not Mr. Woyome ever granted loans to the defendants to enable them to carry out programmes of the church, whether or not those monies given to the church by Woyome were in appreciation of God’s bountiful blessings upon his life and whether or not he was entitled to his claim or any of the reliefs asked for.

According to the judge, Mr. Woyome testified and called three witnesses. Two of the witnesses, Pastor Asomaning and Pastor Newman, were former pastors of the church who had left just like Mr. Woyome and established their own churches or joined others.

According to the judge, “It is a notorious principle of law that he who asserts must proof.”

In the instant suit, he said, since it was Mr. Woyome who said he granted various loans to the defendants, totaling ¢620,750,000.00 and then $5,000, an allegation the defendants denied, it behoved him to lead such evidence that would tilt in his favour the existence of the facts asserted in his claim.

The judge concluded that Mr. Woyome could not lead any such evidence to establish his claim.

He said on the contrary, Mr. Woyome and his witnesses who described themselves as pastors or men of God, proved to be disgruntled former members of the church who, after failing in their bid to get rid of the head pastor as the leader of the church, took this action against the defendants among several others.

The judge pointed out that while Mr. Woyome could not lead any evidence, either oral or documentary, to support his claim that he granted loans to the tune of ¢620,750,000.00 and US$5,000, to either the 1st defendant or the 2nd defendant or both, the particulars of the alleged loans in his statement of claim did not tally with the total figure of ¢620,750,000.00, which he gave as the cedi component of the loan.

The total of the alleged loans, which plaintiff said he gave to the defendants in cedis, from his own pleading, is ¢524,720,000.00 and not ¢620,750,000.00, which he gave as the total.

“The plaintiff who brought the defendants to court to demand the repayment of a loan facility of ¢620,750,000.00 and another $5,000 could not lead any evidence to establish how the said loans were contracted, where contracted, when contracted and the terms of payment,” the trial judge concluded.

Robbers Rape Student Nurse

1

Armed robber

A FIRST YEAR student of the Midwifery Training School (MTS) at Mampong in the Ashanti Region has suffered the ordeal of having three stoutly-built male armed robbers gang-raping her in the full glare of her colleagues.

The dastardly act occurred around 12:30am of Thursday at the Adom Hostel at Mampong where a group of eight masked robbers had besieged the hostel, robbing the innocent students and satisfying their libidos as well.

Four other students in the hostel also suffered the trauma of having the robbers inserting their fingers in their vaginas in the presence of other students.

Two students who woke up to witness the eight robbers wielding deadly weapons in their room collapsed and were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The runaway robbers, who were on a robbery spree at the hostel, managed to rob the students of their valuables including two laptops, mobile phones and undisclosed sums of money.

A student nurse who was at the scene told DAILY GUIDE that one of the students woke up around 12:30 am to urinate outside and the robbers, who were hiding at the scene, took advantage of that to enter the hostel.

The student noticed the presence of the hoodlums so she hurriedly raced back into the hostel but the gangsters caught up with her and took full control of the hostel.

The eight masked robbers, after getting access to the hostel, then at gunpoint, ordered the poor girls to surrender all their belongings, else they would be shot.

The hoodlums reportedly forcibly broke into twelve rooms in the hostel, robbing the students of their valuables including laptops, mobile phones and some undisclosed amount of money.

In the course of the robbery expedition which lasted for about 45minutes, one of the robbers ordered the poor first-year student to lie down on the floor, an order which she obeyed.

The robber then started raping the poor girl in the presence of her mates and after he had satisfied his libido, his two other colleagues also subjected the poor young girl to several bouts of sex.

Four other students that were wearing night gowns also were not spared by the fiendish-looking gangsters as they forcibly inserted their fingers in their private parts, amid wailings by the poor girls.

The hoodlums then tried breaking into another room to attack those girls inside it and in the course of breaking into the room, one of the robbers mentioned the name of one ‘Awudu’ to stop because they had spent much time at the place.

The robbers, wielding deadly weapons such as hammers, sharp knives and locally-manufactured pistols, then bolted with their booty, leaving no trace of where they fled to.

Minutes after they had left, the students called the police who rushed to the scene but the gangsters had by that time vanished with their booty, an eyewitness who looked traumatized stated.

The five poor students, including the first year student that was gang-raped, were then rushed to the hospital for treatment by their colleagues.

Meanwhile, DAILY GUIDE gathered that the students at Adom Hostel are living in fear following the deadly attack.

The paper learnt that most of the students are contemplating leaving the hostel for another hostel in the area where their safety could be guaranteed.

But sources hinted that the school’s management was working hard to intensify security at the Adom Hostel to avert another attack.
