Four executive members of the Ashaiman Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC ) were Saturday severely brutalised while media practitioners ran for their lives when truncheon and machete wielding persons invaded the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) building where a press conference organised by the party was being held.
The press conference was meant to disassociate the party from an intended take over of the Ashaiman lorry park by some party members.
It was also to state the position of the party on the intended action, which according to an earlier briefing, was to allow the assembly perform its core functions as the city authorities.
The attack seemed to have targeted the Ashaiman Organiser of the NDC, Mr James Vee -Jay Agbogedenu, Mr David Worwui-Brown, Deputy Secretary; Mr Setsoafia Doe and Madam Peace Kakraba, executive members of the party.
Properties which belonged to the GPRTU, worth thousands of cedis, were destroyed as a result while fear gripped onlookers who stood by and watched the movie-style action that went on .
When the organisers announced the beginning of the press conference, the machete-wielding persons entered the GPRTU hall on the second floor, shouting and hitting anything in sight, asking: ?Who said you should hold a press conference here? There cannot be any chief executive without a party chairman. Today we will see who is who.?
Media personnel at the event sensed danger and managed to crawl out of the hall to seek refuge before they could be attacked.
The building houses the Dangme Rural Bank, the Ashaiman Fire Service on the ground floor; NDC offices on the first floor and the GPRTU offices on the second floor.
After brutalising the party executive, the attackers ran back into the building and started destroying computers, louvre blades, tables and chairs, among other properties.
They also hit others who tried to intervene on behalf of the executive.
Personnel of the GNFS were also helpless as they gathered in front of their offices and watched the attackers go on the rampage.
After about 45 minutes of action, calm was restored when the constituency party chairman, Mr Gomda, who had all along remained in the building, came out and shouted out at them. The attackers surrendered the truncheons to him and left.
The victims of the attack were later rushed to the Tema General Hospital after the Ashaiman Police had taken their statements and issued them with hospital forms.
A statement initially issued before the press conference indicated the party intentded to disassociate itself from the decision by some of their leaders who claimed to have taken over the Ashaiman lorry park with the consent of the NDC in the Ashaiman Constituency.
According to the statement signed by the Constituency Deputy Secretary, Mr David Worwui Brown and the Constituency Organiser, Mr James Vee-Jay Agbogedenu, the party was of the view that the Ashaiman Municiapl Assembly owned the lorry park and had the sole responsibility to run it .
The statement said party executives urged the assembly to perform its duties to build the ?Better Ghana,? calling on party members to avoid meddling in the affairs of the institutions of the State.
When the Daily Graphic called Mr Agbogedenu on phone later, he expressed disgust at the behaviour of the people who claimed to belong to the same party.
He appealed to the President and the party hierarchy to act swiftly before the actions of a handful of ?selfish people? destroyed the name of the party.
On Friday August 19, 2011 , some irate youthwho call themselves ?foot soldiers? of the NDC in the Ashaiman Municipality threatened to resist any attempt by the party hierarchy to award the contract for the renovation of the Ashaiman main lorry park to any contractor aside their proposed choice.
According to a source at the assembly, the decision by the group to take over the lorry park was met by a combined team of security personnel from the police and the military.
The Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive, Numo Adinortey Addison, condemned the action of the alleged ?foot soldiers? and stated that the assembly would go ahead and perform its role as stipulated in the Local Government Laws.
He said: ?I don?t want to be called to answer for something I have not done.?
Information gathered by the Daily Graphic later indicated that the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mr Ade Coker, visited Ashaiman and called on the security agencies to arrest those who were identified in the riot, without fear or favour.
He was quoted as saying that those who would be found culpable should be surcharged for the destroyed items.
