Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye says he will not play for the national team again while Pape Thiaw remains head coach, hours after Senegal blew a two goal lead and lost the World Cup Round of 32 tie to Belgium 3-2.
The 27 year old posted the ultimatum on Instagram shortly after Wednesday’s match in Seattle, writing that he would address the elimination later but wanted it known immediately that he was stepping away from the squad under the current staff.
Gueye was substituted in the 64th minute for Lamine Camara, a change Thiaw later said was forced by fatigue rather than tactics. Camara went on to concede the penalty that ended Senegal’s tournament, fouling Youri Tielemans in the 125th minute after Belgium had already pulled the match level through Romelu Lukaku and Tielemans himself in the closing minutes of regulation time.
Thiaw has faced repeated questions over his handling of the game but has declined to fault the officiating. Asked directly about the penalty call, he said: “I do not want to interpret the decision.”
The fallout adds to a rocky year for Thiaw. In January he pulled his players off the pitch during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco in protest at a refereeing decision, a result Senegal initially won on the field before the Confederation of African Football later overturned it and handed the title to Morocco. Reports in Senegalese media this week also point to unresolved contract and bonus disputes involving the technical staff during the World Cup campaign.
Senegal’s exit still came with a milestone. The team became the first African side to score ten goals in a single World Cup, with Ismaila Sarr finishing the tournament as the country’s all time leading scorer at the competition.
No response from the Senegalese Football Federation has been published yet, and Thiaw has not commented publicly on Gueye’s statement.
