Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov both scored from the penalty spot as Manchester United beat Stoke to go level on points with Manchester City.

United were without 11 players, including Wayne Rooney, and gave a Premier League debut to third-choice keeper Ben Amos.

But Hernandez broke the deadlock after Jermaine Pennant fouled Park Ji-sung before Berbatov doubled the lead.

A foul by Jonathan Walters on Antonio Valencia was punished by the striker.

With Chelsea and Liverpool providing the opposition in the next two league games, it was vital United bounced back from their FA Cup exit at the weekend.

“As for Ben Amos, he’s got potential. He never flapped at anything.”

Stoke manager Tony Pulis:  “It’s always difficult coming here. We were playing one of the best teams – if not the best team – and we have got to keep the ball a little bit better and get up the pitch.

“Looking at them there (the penalties), they are very debatable but we are at Old Trafford.”

Bolton sign Arsenal’s Ryo Miyaichi on loan for rest of season

Bolton have signed Arsenal midfielder Ryo Miyaichi on loan for the rest of the season.

The Japan youth international, 19, joined Arsenal in January 2011 and spent the second half of last season on loan at Feyenoord.

Miyaichi is not eligible to face his parent club on Wednesday.

“He’s a very talented young player who is is quick and exciting,” Bolton manager Owen Coyle told the club’s official website  .

“He had a great spell on loan at Feyenoord last season.

Abdel Hakim Belhadj says UK and US intelligence were involved in sending him to Libya

Two men who say they were rendered to Libya with the help of the UK have begun an action to sue one of Britain’s most senior former MI6 officers.

Libyan dissidents Sami al-Saadi and Abdel Hakim Belhadj allege that Sir Mark Allen was complicit in their rendition and torture.

Lawyers for the pair served papers on Friday, the first step in a civil action for damages.

Sir Mark has declined to comment on the allegations and legal action.

Mr al-Saadi and Mr Belhadj say they were handed over to Col Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2004.

The Metropolitan Police has already begun its own investigations into the allegations.

The pair had already begun a legal action against the UK government, alleging that it aided and abetted their ill treatment.
‘Dark episode’

Both men say that they were illegally detained and flown to Libya with the help of the UK.

Their wives and children were also rendered to Libya. Mr Belhadj says that his wife was also subjected to ill-treatment.

But in a highly unusual move, lawyers for the men have launched a civil damages claim against Sir Mark Allen, MI6’s former head of counter-terrorism.

Lawyers for the men say they want to sue Sir Mark because his name appears in documents discovered in Tripoli during Gaddafi’s downfall.

Sami al-Saadi claims he was subjected to beatings

They say the documents include a letter allegedly written by Sir Mark in March 2004 to the colonel’s then spy chief, Moussa Koussa.

“I congratulate you on the safe arrival of Abu Abd Allah Sadiq [Mr Belhadj],” says the letter.

“This was the least we could do for you and for Libya to demonstrate the remarkable relationship we have built over the years. I am so glad.

“The intelligence on Abu Abd Allah was British. I know I did not pay for the air cargo. But I feel I have the right to deal with you direct on this.”

Sapna Malik, the men’s solicitor at firm Leigh Day & Co, said Sir Mark would be sued for complicity in torture, misfeasance in public office and negligence.

She said: “We are taking this unusual step of preparing a legal action against an individual as the documents we have in our possession suggest Sir Mark was directly involved in the unlawful rendition of our clients and their families.

“The documents which have so far come to light raise serious questions to answer, particularly in light of the horrendous treatment to which our clients were subjected. There must be full accountability for this dark episode.”

Sir Mark, who left MI6 later in 2004 and joined BP, has declined to comment on the allegations and the legal action.

Earlier in January, the CPS and Metropolitan Police made a joint statement confirming that the allegations raised by the two Libyan men were so serious that they must be investigated before a planned judge-led inquiry into allegations of rendition and torture.

That decision prompted the government to scrap the inquiry, although it has pledged to launch another one after the end of criminal investigations.

Cori Crider from legal charity Reprieve, which is working on the case, said: “Abedelhakim Belhadj and Sami al-Saadi – and their families – deserve an explanation for the appalling abuse they suffered. The documents showing British involvement in their rendition to Libya appear to have Mark Allen’s name all over them – yet we’ve not had a word out of him since they became public last year.

“We need to know whether MI6’s plan to deliver Gaddafi’s opponents into his hands was authorised from the top. If it was, let Sir Mark bring that defence, and let’s hear who signed off on this shameful affair.”

Everton sign striker Nikica Jelavic from Rangers

Everton have signed Croatia international striker Nikica Jelavic from Rangers for £5.5m.

The 26-year-old joins the Blues on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

Jelavic, who moved to the Gers from Rapid Vienna in August 2010, has scored 17 goals in all competitions so far this season.

He becomes David Moyes’ third signing of the January transfer window, following deals for Landon Donovan and Darron Gibson.

Jelavic received a warm reception after being introduced to Everton supporters at half- time in Tuesday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester City at Goodison Park.

He will be available to make his first appearance in Saturday’s trip to Wigan.

“It is great news for us. We have been looking for a centre forward for a while. We just hope now he can help us score some goals and we can build on tonight’s performance,” said Everton manager David Moyes.

“I think tonight he would have seen the hard work that the players put in. He is coming from a great football club but I think he is coming to another great football club.

“He really wants to play in the Premier League and he really wants to play for Everton. That goes a long way.

“He will also want to play for Croatia in the European Championship so hopefully that will keep his form good, keep him hungry to score and play well.”

Jelavic said he would relish playing in the Premier League.

“It is a big thing for me and it is a new step in my career, a step forward,” he told the Everton club website.

“The Scottish Premier League is not as high a level as here in England but I think it will help a lot as it is not so much a big difference.

“I think I can bring some good football and to score many goals and to try to win some trophies.”

Moyes was initially interested in Jelavic when he moved to Ibrox from Rapid Vienna for £4m in August 2010.

Scottish champions Rangers are currently experiencing financial problems and failed to replace Jelavic before the transfer window closed after having a bid for Norwich City’s Grant Holt rejected but club owner Craig Whyte defended the sale.

“The reality of Jelavic’s departure is two-fold,” he said. “One, the player wanted to leave and there is no point in trying to keep a player who no longer wants to be at Ibrox.

“Two, the club is simply not in a financial position to turn down offers for players which give the club a good return on its original investment.”

Rangers manager Ally McCoist had admitted on Saturday that Jelavic’s departure would be “a big loss”.

“I’d also like to tell you I wouldn’t like to lose him. Of course I wouldn’t, because he’s a good player. But I understand the economics of our club and I understand the economics of football. Sometimes they dictate and determine what happens,” he said.

I just stumbled on her latest single ‘Budiin’ featuring Stonebwoy. Though I’m not a fan of Reggae music, I think I have fallen in love with the track which is in Reggae vein.

Senegal anti-Wade protest: Two demonstrators killed

The opposition want “national resistance” to the president’s bid for a third term

Two people have been killed in the Senegalese capital during a demonstration against President Abdoulaye Wade’s re-election bid.

Police and thousands of opposition supporters clashed in the centre of the city on Tuesday evening.

Tear gas was fired and one student died when he was run over by a police truck.

Earlier in the week, two people were shot dead during protests in a northern town after a court ruled that Mr Wade’s third-term election bid was legal.

The opposition June 23 Movement (M23) had organised the demonstration and has sworn a campaign of “national resistance” until Mr Wade’s rescinds his candidacy.

Elections in the West African country – often held up as one of Africa’s model democracies – are due on 26 February.

Once a veteran opposition leader himself, Mr Wade, 85, was first elected in 2000 – ending 40 years of rule by the Socialist Party.

Senegal’s constitution has a two-term limit but the constitutional court has ruled this does not include Mr Wade’s first term, which began before the clause was adopted.

At the same time as allowing Mr Wade to stand, the court ruled singer Youssou N’Dour and two other opposition candidates could not run.

The US has warned that the ruling could jeopardise Senegal’s long-standing record for democracy and political stability.

Mr Wade’s campaign spokesman, Amadou Sall, has said if opposition supporters do not want Mr Wade as president they should go to the polls next month.

“Every five years the Senegalese citizens have the right to express themselves… on 26 February if they decide they don’t want no more Abdoulaye Wade for president, Abdoulaye Wade will not be president, so it’s all in their hands,” he told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme.

Co-hosts Gabon finished top of Group C at the Africa Cup of Nations after beating Tunisia 1-0 in Franceville.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck his third of the tournament, with some assistance from reserve Tunisia keeper Rami Jeridi.

Captain Daniel Cousin set up Aubameyang, who gently stroked his shot goalwards but was helped by the legs of Jeridi, who dived away from the shot.

Tunisia started brightly, with Sabeur Khalifa – one of eight changes by coach Sami Trabelsi – creating space well for himself, but firing straight at the side-netting at the near post.

Cousin hussled and harried the Tunisian defence from the outset, and collided with reserve Tunisian goalkeeper Jeridi – who looked shaky all night – early on.

Aubameyang was also busy upping the tempo of the game, with the Panthers midfield attempting to find him in behind the Tunisian defence, but unable to deliver the right ball.

Approaching the break, Gabon found the level they showed to dramatically turn Friday’s game against Morocco on its head.

Cousin and Tunisia defender Aymen Abdennour also continued to clash, with the Gabonese captain repeatedly colliding with his marker and the two exchanging numerous words.

Tunisia captain Issam Jemaa started the second half on the front foot for the Tunisians, but saw two opportunities charged down in quick succession.

Gabon once more regained the upper hand, however, and made their superior attacking play count as Aubameyang latched onto Cousin’s headed flick-on and shot calmly at Jeridi, who should have done a lot better, but the helped the ball on its way into the net, on 62 minutes.

Gabon coach Rohr praised his players for maintaining their motivation with qualification already secured.

“It was not easy because we were already qualified for the quarter-finals,” he said.

“But thanks to the professional attitude and fighting spirit of the players, we won to finish top of the group.”

Tunisia coach Trabelsi said he made so many changes to protect his players already on bookings.

“We rested some of the players because they have already been booked and we did not wish to risk them before the quarter-finals,” he said.

“However, those who played today showed many good qualities because we played well but we could not win the match.”

The court trying Rwandan genocide suspects is appealing for countries to give refuge for those acquitted, the UN tribunal’s spokesman has told the BBC.

Five of 10 people cleared of involvement in the 1994 killings believe they cannot return to Rwanda.

They remain in a house in the Tanzanian town of Arusha, where the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) is based, guarded by police.

The ICTR is due to wind up its trials by the end of this year.

Some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were massacred in 100 days in 1994.
‘Burden’

ICTR spokesperson Roland Amoussouga told the BBC that finding countries willing to accept those acquitted of charges “was one of the key challenges facing the tribunal”.

“It’s a burden on us to continue hosting for so many years these acquitted people and we’ve worked with them and their lawyers to identify suitable countries were they can be sent. So far we have not been successful,” he said.

The five men still living in Arusha and acquitted by the ICTR are all Hutus and include a former brigadier general, ex-ministers and a businessman.

They live together in a safe house and can go to town and to church, but otherwise cannot leave.

Andre Ntagerura – the former minister of transport – has been waiting nearly six years for refuge since his acquittal.

The five have been joined in the safe house by two others who have served their sentences, but also have nowhere to go.

BBC Africa analyst Martin Plaut says their fate resembles the detainees at Guantanamo Bay – the detention facility which the US wishes to close but whose inmates other countries are reluctant to take.

The men in Arusha have families in Belgium, Canada and France but so far they cannot get permission to join them, despite appeals to the UN Security Council.

Since the court started in 1997, the ICTR has dealt with 72 cases – of which 18 are on appeal.

It has three cases in progress and one person awaiting trial – all of these must be finished this year, with the appeals hearings to be completed by the end of 2013.
