Adenta Housing, a well planned residential area in the Capital City of Accra, is gradually being taken over by squatters who are putting up unauthorized structures without permits.

This development is breeding illegal activities including the sale and smoking of Indian hemp, armed robbery and other social vices to the community.

Our investigations have established that, even though the Adenta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) is aware of the fast rate at which slums are being established in the community, he is keeping a blind eye to it.
Sources alleged that, people who have constructed illegal structures on waterways and on storm drains were given the approval by the Assembly.

Our visit to the community revealed that, there is a fast developing slum in Adenta Housing, where wooden structures (kiosks) are used to ‘decorate’ the area with no regards to plan and sanitation issues.
The journalists who visited the grounds were nearly lynched, as people living in the newly established slums, accosted them and verbally attacked them.

According to the people putting up such structures, they have contacted the Adenta Municipal Assembly which gave them the authority to continue and hence no amount of demolition threat can deter them from continuing.
Although warning signs have been written on the walls and the structures, residents turn deaf ear to the warnings. This our team gathered, was because, the Adenta Municipal Assembly failed to institute any punitive measures against such recalcitrant people who always do things their own way and damn the consequences.

A contractor working on one of the structures, who tried to challenged the journalists who visited the area, indicated that, their area is not the only place where such structures are being constructed and that, there are other areas where people have been allowed to build without permits.

“Is this the only place buildings are being put up on along storm drains?” he challenged.
In an interview with some residents of the Adenta Housing, they expressed disappointment at the City Authorities for allowing such activity to go on.

According to them, since the development has given rise to illegal activities including robbery and other social vices.

They have therefore called on the Adenta Municipal Assembly to carry out a demolition of the newly constructed slum around the area to ensure sanity.
