MTN Mobile Money has clarified that reversing erroneous transactions requires careful investigation to prevent fraud and protect both senders and recipients.

Godwin Tamakloe, MTN MoMo’s Chief Regulatory, Risk, and Compliance Officer, emphasized that instant reversals are impossible due to cases where customers falsely claim mistakes after willingly sending money.

Speaking on Hot FM Morning Drive, Tamakloe revealed that some users attempt to exploit the system such as a man who reported his church tithe payment as accidental, only for the pastor to confirm it was intentional. To ensure fairness, MTN follows a 15-day verification process, temporarily freezing recipient wallets and gathering evidence before acting.

“We can’t block funds without due process both parties are our customers,” he said. While urging prompt reporting of genuine errors, Tamakloe asked users to cooperate during investigations, assuring that verified claims will be resolved transparently. The measures aim to balance fraud prevention with customer protection in Ghana’s booming mobile money ecosystem.
