Zimbabwe has been upgraded to Tier 2 Watch List from Tier 3 under the United States human trafficking law after making significant progress in combating human trafficking in the past year.

According to the 2017 Trafficking in Persons Report released by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Washington on Tuesday and presented to Zimbabwean media by the U.S. embassy on Wednesday, Zimbabwe has made considerable progress but still does not fully meet the minimum standards for elimination of human trafficking.

“These achievements included increased efforts to investigate and prosecute alleged trafficking crimes,” the report said.

According to the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000, there are four tiers, Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 2 watch list and Tier 3, where each country in the report is placed based on the extent of government’s efforts to meet the TVPA’s minimum standards for the elimination of human trafficking.
